Chrysler’s VF Valiant Pacer 225 was a budget-minded car with performance that punched above its pay grade and opened Australia’s eyes to the benefits of motorsport development.

The VF Pacer had a diamond up front in the form of a high-compression 3.7-litre, 175 bhp slant six that at the time was the most powerful six-cylinder made in Australia. Its signature low-rev torque could happily launch it to sub 18-second quarter miles.

Power wasn’t the only thing the Pacer had going for it – it came with manual floor shift, lowered suspension, front anti-sway bar and tachometer, and was lent racer good looks thanks to special wheel covers, bright colour options and racing stripes.

The full package offered punchy performance at a great price and was the perfect match for young and/or feisty drivers looking for something that was both sporty and practical.

Its impact was felt both on the roads and the track, and went beyond just being a great value performer. Find out how in VF Valiant Pacer 225: The Sports Sedan that set Chrysler’s pulse racing thanks to our friends at the Shannons Club.

Goodwood On Board

Hop on board and hang on tight for the fastest ever recorded lap of the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Oh, and turn it up – this is what a race car should sound like.

This lap comes from the Bruce McLaren Trophy race held during the 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting, and it’s one Bruce would be proud of. The lines are bang on, the driving is smooth and on the limit, and the Chevrolet V8 is thunderous.

Nick Padmore pilots a Lola-Chevrolet T70 Spyder around the Goodwood Motor Circuit to a new lap record of 1:18.2. His lap knocked .7 of a second off the previous time of 1:18.9 set by Andrew Smith in 2010, also in a Lola-Chevrolet T70 Spyder.

Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart jointly hold the original record of 1:20.4, set in 1965 before the circuit closed in 1966.

Buckle up, crank up the volume and hold on tight for the fastest ever recorded lap of the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Take a Wander Through Toyota's Secret Stash

Head into the bowels of TMG to uncover some of the treasures in Toyota’s secret stash, and learn a little about the famous marque’s European motorsport team along the way.

TMG stands for Toyota Motorsport GmbH, and it’s been handling motorsport duties for Toyota since 1972.

Back in 1972 Ove Andersson was looking to run a Toyota Celica in the RAC rally. This meant that his Celica was constantly travelling from Japan to Europe, however, and that was causing troubles. So he set up a workshop, Andersson Motorsport, which grew to become Toyota’s European motorsport team.

Through their history TMG have engineered, built and developed some of the most exciting and successful racing cars in rally and sports car history. The Corolla and Celica rally cars that have rolled out of their doors are responsible for four World Rally Championship Manufacturers’ titles, five Drivers’ titles and many, many rally and safari wins.

They spent eight years in Formula 1 in the naughties, picking up thirteen podiums and three pole positions. Over in sportscar racing the awesome Toyota GT-One claimed a class win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and its younger brother the Toyota TS040 Hybrid took third outright in the race last year.

This video from XCAR takes us for a visual tour of TMG’s facilities, introducing us to some of the legendary machinery housed within its collection and exploring its history thanks to John Day.

It’s packed with interesting and significant Toyota racing cars, some great classic images and an entertaining chat about their racing history. Let us know if you spot any favourite machines in the comments!

Set the Countryside Ablaze with the Beast of Turin: Fiat S76

Beast of Turin

Shatter the peace of the idyllic English countryside around Goodwood in the most magnificent manner as the Beast of Turin returns to Goodwood and is driven for the first time in more than a century.

The Beast is a 1911 Fiat S76 that has been under restoration for the past ten years. It was recently fired up in a moment I don’t think any of us will be forgetting any time soon!

The Fiat S76 was originally a land speed record car, and Fiat built two to chase the record for the flying kilometre and flying mile. They nabbed the flying mile record in 1911 and hit 135 miles per hour attempting the kilometre record but were unable to make the return journey in the allotted time.

This video was filmed when owner Duncan Pittaway brought the car to the Goodwood Hillclimb for its first test drive earlier this year and invited Lord March along for the ride.

It revels in the cacophony of the Fiat’s 28.5-litre, four-cylinder volcano of an engine, capturing the flame spitting, smoke belching majesty brilliantly. Our sincere thanks go out to Stefan Marjoram for putting this marvel to film with such grace!

The Beast of Turin is due to head to the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2015 and will take part in the most beautifully named motoring category I have ever encountered – ‘Earth Shattering Edwardian Leviathans’. The best part? Duncan is planning to drive the Beast to the Festival of Speed from his base in Bristol.

Lola T70 Mk1

Images: RMD

This race-ready Lola T70 Mk1 was driven by Mark Donohue, Walt Hansgen and Parnelli Jones in its day and is looking for a new owner. It’s up for sale at RMD.

The car, SL70/12, was delivered to John Mecom Racing to be used as a spare chassis in 1965. It arrived with good timing, as Walt Hansgen had just written off Mecom Racing’s original car, SL70/3, while practicing for the Players 200 at Mosport Park.

Lola T70 Mk1

SL70/12 was built up using the engine, gearbox and running gear from SL70/3 and made its debut at the Galveston Regional SCCA race in July of 1965, with Walt Hansgen recovered and ready to race.

Mark Donohue partnered with Hansgen for the Road America 500 in September of ’65 and put the car on pole. Sadly that race was not to be with the pair dropping out early.

Lola T70 Mk1

For the Autoweek Championship later in the year the car was stripped and rebuilt with components upgraded to Mk2 specification. Parnelli Jones was on board handling driving duty for the end of year events.

Jones qualified well at Laguna Seca, Riverside and Las Vegas, but reliability let him down and left the team with a set of DNFs.

In 1966 SL70/12 was rebuilt again and sold to Leroy Melcher, who raced it in the south east divisions of the SCCA and won his class championship that year.

Lola T70 Mk1

At the end of the year he sold the car to a Dodge dealership in Houston, who sold it on to a Venezuelan by the name of Henry Hoyos. He took the car to South America, racing it there for a year before selling it on.

By 1979 it was in the hands of collector Mac McClendon, who kept it until he sold it to its current owner in 2007. In 2010 the car enjoyed a restoration to its original Mecom livery as raced by Walt Hansgen and Mark Donohue at Road America in ’65.

Lola T70 Mk1

It’s been raced successfuly in the United States since, and received an engine rebuild in 2014. It’s now in tip-top shape and won the Classic 24 Hours at Daytona last year.

SL70/12 is sold with an incredibly-detailed set of documentation and history, is in race-ready condition and will be welcome at historic race meetings around the world. It looks like an absolute ball, and we hope to see it continuing its recent historic racing success in new hands!

Head to RMD’s website here for more information.

Goodwood Members' Meeting

Tag along with the ever-effusive Chris Harris for the feast of motorsport that was the Goodwood 73rd Members’ Meeting. There’s lots of good bits with very, very sideways classic racing cars of all kinds and one of the most exciting races we’ve seen in a long time.

You’ll love it.

The video kicks off calmly, enjoying the history, machinery and feel of the meeting. Harris gives us a look at the Rover SD1 he’s brought to race and then wanders through the pits and paddocks to explore the incredible selection of machinery present on the way to his other race car for the weekend – a ’65 Porsche 911.

“Where else can you see high airbox F1 cars running fast, McLaren F1 GTRs dicing on track and Group C racers going at serious speed. And the fastest race Mini imaginable!”

And then it all gets very exciting, when the pit and paddock wandering concludes and we dive into a race packed with stunning little 911s. It’s Harris at his best – completely sideways and flat out. The field is absolutely on point, putting on a stunning show of sideways, mirror-to-mirror competition.

It’s racing that puts the excitement of contemporary top-tier motorsport to shame, and we can’t get enough of it.

Enjoy a few minutes with the 1969 Trans Am Mustang in which Allan Moffat won 101 races in this brilliant photo gallery by Chris Nicholls.

Allan Moffat 1969 Trans Am Mustang

In 1969 Ford gifted this car to Allan Moffat, and they would get on famously. They won 101 out of 150 races and at their best held every outright touring car lap record in Australia simultaneously.

Allan Moffat 1969 Trans Am Mustang

The car is the second of seven race cars produced for 1969 and was hand assembled from a kit straight from Kar Kraft. Under the hood is a 5942cc eight-cylinder Ford Boss 302, breathing through four 48 IDA Webers and putting out 485 bhp.

Allan Moffat 1969 Trans Am Mustang

Moffat first met the car at JFK in New York before they returned to Australia together. Their first race would be at Sandown, where they beat Ian Geoghegan, Norm beechey and Bob Jane to take the world-first victory for a ’69 Trans Am Mustang.

Moffat kept the car for a quarter-century before selling it to David Bowden.

Alfa Romeo 6C Spider 2300 MM & 6C 2500 Berlinetta

Episode two of CarTorque’s second season tells the story of two very special and rare cars, an Alfa Romeo 6C Spider 2300 MM and 6C 2500 Berlinetta, being brought back to life by Paul Chaleyer and the team at Historic and Vintage Restorations.

“”Well I’ve bought a couple of Alfas, they’ll be delivered this afternoon.” These two cars arrived, basically as chassis, completely disassembled.”

Assisted by Michael Simcoe, the Vice President of Design for GM International, the team started with two chassis, a pile of bits, a model from the owner and some historic photos. What followed was a once-in-a-lifetime journey that saw these beautiful machines brought back into the world to ride again.

Along the way they uncovered history, pushed their artistic and engineering limits, lived out dreams and built two truly remarkable cars. It’s a beautifully-shot feature that tells a classic story, and has a brilliant bit at the beginning when you can listen to the cars open up and sing.

Follow CarTorque TV on Facebook here. Tune in to episode five this Saturday at 3pm on Channel 10 & Sunday 2pm on Channel One.

One of a small batch of machines built by NCR for TT Formula One and FIM Coup d’Endurance racing, this 1979 Ducati 905cc NCR Racing Motorcycle is a mint-condition marvel. It will go up for sale at Bonhams’ Spring Stafford Sale on the 26th of April.

NCR in Italy worked on the philosophy that everything could be improved by adding lightness or power, or by fine-tuning the details. In the late ’70s they supplied a batch of motorycles to Sports Motorcycles for Mike Hailwood, who was set to make a comeback ride in the 1978 Isle of Man TT having been out of professional bike racing for seven years and away from the Isle of Man for more than a decade.

The bikes had Daspa frames and 864cc desmodromic engines that put 90bhp through the rear wheel thanks to worked cylinder heads, larger valves, higher compression pistons, Lucas RITA ignition, stronger dry clutch, tougher gearbox and Malossi-modified 41mm Dell’Orto carbies. They could hit 149 miles per hour.

1979 Ducati 905cc NCR Racing Motorcycle

Mike Hailwood put that speed to use, creating a legend for the bikes by smashing the Honda works team and winning the Formula One TT with a new speed record. In practice he lapped at 111 miles per hour, and in the Formula One race he set a lap record of 110.62 miles per hour.

At the Post-TT race at Mallory Park a week later Hailwood beat Honda again, and would continue to pick up wins in the Endurance Championship.

This particular NCR Ducati is one of five manufactured for 1979. It’s had just two owners through its lifetime and has only been used in parades and hill climbs.

1979 Ducati 905cc NCR Racing Motorcycle

Its engine was opened for the first time recently to allow a Ducati expert to determine its originality and condition and that report is included with the bike.

While it may not have a binder full of race results to its name, this bike benefits from its condition and originality. It’s a beautiful thing indeed!

It will head to auction at Bonhams’ Spring Stafford Sale on the 26th of April. For more information hit this link to Bonhams’ website.

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

Images: RM Sotheby’s by Drew Shipley

This 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft is absolutely breathtaking. It sold earlier in the year at RM Sotheby’s’ Arizona sale for the princely sum of US$660,000, but that won’t stop us drooling over it!

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

The ultimate version of Ford’s Ferrari-killer, the GT40 Mk IV earned its spot in motorsport history in a golden age for sportscar racing with a 100% win record. It raced in the 1967 12 Hours of Sebring, which Mario Andretti and Bruce McLaren won, and then in the race it was designed for – the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, which Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt won.

Only twelve Mk IV chassis were built, and Kar Kraft in the United States was responsible for them. This makes finding an original car with racing history a challenging and frighteningly-expensive proposition.

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

Saddened by the rarity of this magnificent machine and determined to give more people the opportunity to experience it, Mike Teske of Kar-Kraft LLC put together a crack team to recreate the Mk IV.

Four decades of research and support, including original Kar-Kraft engineering drawings and the input of people like Carroll Shelby, Edsel Ford II, Dan Gurney and many more involved in the original Mk IV program, was invested through a period of eight years to build a series of Kar-Kraft MK IVs.

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

“These cars are more than just steel-chassised cars that look like the original Mk IVs. They are, in all respects, exact duplicates of the originals. They are constructed to the same specifications and use the same techniques as the originals.” – World Registry of Cobras and GT40s

They are immaculate, rivet-perfect recreations of the originals complete with the honeycomb-aluminium riveted and bonded chassis, fibreglass bodywork and the monstrous 427-cubic inch V8 that blessed the original.

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

They’ve received worldwide recognition and are so good that the FIA has accepted them to compete alongside the originals.

This car is Chassis J-16 and was completed at the end of 2010 for Joe Henderson of North Carolina. It’s the fourth of seven continuations and the only one finished in this fetching Princess Blue with white stripes and red and blue accents.

Ford GT40 Mk IV Continuation by Kar Kraft

It’s only raced once and qualifies for HSR and SCRA events. It’s sold with an FIA Historical Technical Passport to compete in historic meetings in Europe.

This exceptional machine sold at RM Sotheby’s’ Arizona sale for US$660,000 in January of 2015, and we’re jealous of its new owner! For more information head to RM Sotheby’s website here.

McLaren F1 GTR Long-tail

Join Kenny Bräck for a nicely-pinned run up the hill at Goodwood in a McLaren F1 GTR Long-Tail at the Festival of Speed.

“It’s fast. It’s got no driver aids so you’re on your own in there you know, and I enjoy that because the new cars now have so many things on there you nearly don’t know how to drive them anymore. You don’t know what to expect when something happens. At least here it’s predictable – you’re in the driver’s seat.” – Kenny Brack

The 1998 Indy Racing League champion and Indianapolis 500 winner leaves very little on the table in his runs, and they’re things of on-the-limit sprinting beauty. As is the F1 GTR Long-tail, of course; skipping and sliding and howling its signature BMW V12 song.

Kenny Bräck was chasing Sébastien Loeb and Michael Bartels for the win. Both were in significantly more modern hardware, however, with Loeb piloting his Peugeot 208 T16 Pikes Peak car and Bartels in a Maserati MC12.

Enjoy the video, which covers one lap from outside the car and the second from within. Don’t forget to turn it up!

Tiff Needell Rover SD1

As soon as we heard the noise coming out of Tiff Needell’s Ex-works Daily Express Rover No.9 in this video, we knew we had to share it with you. It’s a spiritual experience.

The video of his lap, shot in a super-wide hyperspace-inspired angle, is pretty good as well.

Tiff was qualifying for the Gerry Marshall Trophy for Group 1 touring cars up to 1982 in 2015’s 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting. The race is named for Gerry Marshall, a British saloon car racer whose legendary four-decade career earned him hero status with racing fans.

This run sees Tiff qualifying his way to third in the Daily Express Dave Price Racing and Tom Walkinshaw Racing Rover SD1. As you’d expect from Tiff, the lap’s on the button and awesome.

1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000

Head back to 1979 and Mount Panorama to join fellow motorsport fans witnessing the birth of live on-board footage in this clip from the 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000.

Race coverage these days is quite stunning. We have cameras by corners, whizzing along wires, stuck all over cars and even on helmets giving us first person footage. And it’s all broadcast live and uninterrupted with radio chatter, telemetrics and more.

Back in 1979, this level of sophistication was just a dream. The 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000, however, would see one the birth of one of our favourite elements – live on-board footage.

This clip gets plops you on board the Toyota Celecia of Peter Williamson as he comments on a lap doing battle with Alfa Romeo Alfettas and Ford Escort RS2000s in Class C, along with all the other muscle on the track at Mount Panorama. He and co-driver Mike Quinn would finish ninth outright in the race after qualifying 33rd, and claim a class win in doing so.

It’s brilliant old footage that’s packed with great racing, classic cars and vision of Mount Panorama in its early days, and it’s an exciting moment in the history of motorsport coverage. Peter’s clearly enjoying his day at the office, and there are some moments that we’d never see today (check him flying past the flat bed). Hit play.

Back in 1976 Ron Hodgson Racing and Leyland Australia had a plan for a unique racing Triumph Dolomite Sprint. It was set to be the fastest, toughest and rarest in the world. So why did it never race?

With a 2.0-litre motor, big spoilers and flares, the car was to be designed to be a petite, but similar tough racer reminiscent of the team’s Group C Holden Torana L34.

The team had a thoroughly documented proposal backed by Leyland Australia, Bob Morris set to drive and Ron Missen on board as chief mechanic. When it got to Australia’s governing body for motorsport, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, however, it was rejected.

This Team Trust 1990 Porsche 962C, up for sale at Canepa, is a stunning example of the latest and greatest in Porsche factory 962s. It’s also one of of the most original 962s around today.

The car, 962-170 was built by Porsche to FIA World Sportscar Championship configuration as a complete rolling chassis. It was sent to Japan in 1991 without a motor to save on customs duty, but its motor, 956 358, made its way over shortly after.

As the car was one of the very latest factory 962s built by Porsche, it benefited from all of the development work that had gone into the cars through their history. The brand new 3.2-litre turbo 962 motor represented the latest and greatest of Porsche’s factory specification 962 motors.

Trust used 962-170 as a testing car, so it only picked up a small number of track hours through the course of its period career. It also avoided the rough and tumble adventures of racing and so survived its career without any modification or damage. These factors mean that it survives today as an incredibly period correct and original machine.

Team Trust 1990 Porsche 962C

It recently enjoyed a complete, no-expenses-spared restoration completed by the experts at Canepa and has been fully sorted, track tested and race readied. It’s eligible and welcome at historic racing events the world over and is sold with a current HMSA log book.

So often we look for an exciting race history when we look at historic racing cars. In this case, it’s the car’s lack of a racing history that makes it so special. This truly original and stunning machine would make an awesome addition to any collection, and an even better historic racer. Head to Canepa here for more information.

Jan Opperman

Sit down with an effusive and entertaining Robin Miller from RACER for a little motorsport story time, enjoying the incredible racing adventures of Jan Opperman.

“He was leading the race, gets hit with a rock. His goggles filled up with blood, so he slows down off the cushion, peels his goggles off and lets all the blood drain out. Puts his goggles back on. Drives back up from fifth to win the race. A little blood didn’t slow Jan Opperman down – he was a badass.”

It’s one thing to be able to recount the incredible goings on that make up history of motorsport. It’s an entirely different thing to weave these stories together with the captivating skill of a true storyteller. And that, of course, is the best way to enjoy them.

Robin Miller is the master storyteller starring in this video, and Jan Opperman is the man providing the fuel for his tales. Jan Opperman was a born racer who made his name racing sprint cars, as well as racing in the USAC Championship Car series and the Indy 500. He’s a one-of-a-kind character who burned incredibly brightly and contributed many legends to the history of motorsport, before leaving us much to soon. Enjoy his stories, thanks to Racer and Robin Miller.

Rover SD1: Fast and Full Noise Around Goodwood

Rover SD1

Tag along with Chris Ward in his ex-Patrick Motor Group Rover SD1 for a fast, full noise and ferociously-sideways master class in racing the Goodwood Motor Circuit.

Chris is on the button in the Rover SD1, screaming apex to apex in beautifully-controlled power oversteer. It’s the best kind of sideways too – plentiful, but still neat and fast, with Chris kissing the apexes of some very nice lines as he works his way through the field.

The wide-angle shot set back in the car is great for emphasising the work being put in behind the wheel and giving a good feel for the movement in the car as it fights its way up and down that one step over the edge of traction.

And let’s not forget the racing – it’s close and exciting with just the right margin of respect. Perfect.

Rover SD1 racing

Hop back on board with Chris Harris for part two of his 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting adventures. This part is all historic touring car racing, all the time, as he tackles the Gerry Marshall Trophy in a Rover SD1.

And it has a good bit with Tiff Needell.

“Isn’t this what racing is all about? Insanely fast Minis hassling Camaros; gaggles of Capris slewing around the place.”

Monkey Harris’ ferocious sideways steering continues unabated in this video, which sees him and co-driver Chris Ward tackle the 45-minute two-driver Gerry Marshall Trophy for superb Group 1 Touring Cars.

The pair had qualified 23rd for the race after failing to finish the qualifying sprint race because of a driveline vibration. Harris was behind the wheel for the start with two laps of experience driving the car, and one cheeky practice start snuck in coming out of the holding paddock under his belt.

As one of the faster cars in the field the pair had a great race fighting their way back up to the pointy end, and there’s brilliant driving the whole way through. Make sure you stay until the end for a wonderful little interview with the drivers as well.
