Video: How to Bump Start a Maserati 250F Mid Race

Bump Start a Maserati 250F

What to do if you’re stuck on your own mid-race with no go, no starter motor and you’re driving a Maserati 250F Grand Prix car that has no use for a battery? All you need is some quick thinking, a strong arm and some good old fashioned golden age racer gumption.

This is how you bump start a Maserati 250F mid-race.

I’d wager that both of the key elements of this series of events have happened to all of us at some point. You’re searching for the limits of adhesion when you happen to find yourself looking too deeply, spinning, and coming to a rest as the engine conks out. And who can forget the classic bump start – a little bit of forward momentum, ignition on, second gear and drop the clutch.

I’d say it’s less likely, however, that most of us have combined these efforts solo and mid race. In a Maserati 250F, no less.

Simon Diffey was having a great dice holding second in the Hawthorn Trophy race at the 73rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting when he had a spin and came to rest conked out, but at least pointing in the right direction on the inside of the corner.

Barely a blink later and he’s off and racing again. Enjoy his quick thinking in this brilliant clip from Goodwood Road & Racing.

Schumacher and Hill: The Most Controversial Move

Schumacher and Hill France 1994

Schumacher and Hill in France, 1994, thanks to the Cahier Archive

Set aside a minute and head back to November of 1994 to recount the controversial end to one of Formula 1’s most closely-competed, contentious and dark seasons. This is the 1994 Adelaide Australian Grand Prix, and Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill are about to end it on a downer.

“Going in to the last place with a one point deficit to Michael is always going to be, unfortunately, putting you in a position where you’ve got everything to lose. It’s over now and it’s a bit of an empty feeling, but I think I gave him a good run for his money.”

Schumacher, driving for Benetton-Ford, and Hill, driving for Williams-Renault, spent the entirety of the 1994 Formula 1 World Championship trading places on the top of the podium. By the time they got to Australia for the closing round of the season they sat well clear of the rest of the field with Schumacher on 92 points and Hill on 91.

When they left Australia they still sat well clear of the rest of the field with Schumacher on 92 points and Hill on 91. There was one substantial change, however – Schumacher had become the Formula 1 World Champion.

His move after coming off during lap 36 would go down as one of the sport’s most controversial. Check it out in the video.

Because Formula 1 has very little understanding of social media, you will have to click through to YouTube to watch the clip.

Learn to Skid at Jim Russell’s Racing School – 1959

Jim Russell's Racing Driver School

Back in 1959, one pound a week would buy you a year’s worth of monthly racing instruction at Snetterton with cars, track and fuel included, thanks to Jim Russell’s budding racing driver school. Get the pitch and enjoy some classic footage in this brilliant clip from its very earliest days.

“The ignoble and humiliating skid, a thing which everyday motorists hope to avoid like the plague, is deliberately induced during this demonstration on a specially-prepared and very skiddy piece of tarmac. This motorist’s nightmare is located on the famous Snetterton circuit, where new pupils are being taught the rudiments of motor racing.”

Jim Russell built up a formidable reputation racing in Formula Three during the mid-’50s. He won the British Formula Three Championship three times, from ’55 to ’57, claiming some 64 wins in the series. Along the way he would also claim eleven Formula Two wins and six sports car races, before a crash at Le Mans ended his racing career.

He set up his racing driver school a few years earlier, in 1956, and it became an incredible success. So much so that it lives on today, and has helped to develop the talents of drivers like Emerson Fittipaldi, Derek Bell and Jacques Villeneuve.

This video is from 1959 and provides potential podium-sitters the pitch for the school’s many charms. It’s packed with gorgeous machines, terror-inducing safety procedures and period charm. Brilliant.

Holden VN Commodore SS Group A

When the Holden VN Commodore SS Group A hit the track in 1991 it drove straight into the fearsome maw of Godzilla. It never had a chance.

Nissan’s R32 Skyline GT-R pushed the boundaries of the FIA’s rulebook to their very limits. The result was a monster with a twin-turbo 2.6-litre DOHC 24-valve inline six that, in qualifying, unleashed 700 bhp through a six-speed gearbox, electronically-controlled central differential and sophisticated all-wheel drive system.

It’s the ultimate Group A touring car, and nothing on the circuit at the time really stood a chance against it, including Holden’s VN Commodore SS Group A.

Head to the Shannons Club here to enjoy the story of the VN Commodore SS Group A, Holden’s last Group A Commodore, in Holden VN Commodore SS Group A: Taking a pocket knife to a gun fight.

This 1981 BMW 530i Competition Saloon has a class win in the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps under its belt, kicked off a seventeen-year partnership between Bastos and BMW, and is heading to auction at Bonhams’ Spa Classic sale.

Back in 1977, Juma won the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps with a purpose-built BMW 530i driven by Eddy Joosen and Jean-Claude Andruet. They would try again in ’78, ’79 and ’80, building new cars each year, until a final attempt in 1981 before Group A regulations came in.

1981 BMW 530i Competition Saloon

This car, JUMA 1025, was the car they built for that 1981 race. They were backed by Bastos, with Eddy Joosen back in the drivers seat, joined again by Jean-Claude Andruet and Dirk Vermeersch taking the third shift.

The team settled in as favourites for the race thanks to Juma’s racing development skills and the 530i’s impressive handling and braking. And they set out to match that pace, leading the night shift comfortably.

1981 BMW 530i Competition Saloon

Early in the morning Dirk Vermeersche missed the ‘Bus Stop’ and chose not to follow a marshal’s instructions as he took the escape road, leading to his exclusion for the rest of the race. Joosen and Andruet were left to finish the race by themselves, but continued on unabated, maintaining the lead until a broken rocker arm in the closing stages of the race sent them for a long pitstop.

They would ultimately bring the car home in second overall, claiming a win in the over 2500cc Class.

1981 BMW 530i Competition Saloon

Following the 1981 season the car was sold to a privateer who raced it until 1987, when it was put into storage. And that’s where it stayed for two decades!

In 2010 it was treated to an exhaustive restoration completed by LM-Engineering. During the restoration great care was taken to keep it to specification and preserve its period Juma technology.

1981 BMW 530i Competition Saloon

Under the hood is a 3.5-litre BMW M30 engine that puts out some 295 horsepower with triple Weber carbies. The roll cage and fuel cell have been replaced to meet FIA regulations, while everything else is ship shape and ready to race.

The car looks stunning finished in its period Bastos livery.

Ready to race, with an excellent period history, this machine will be welcome at historic events around the world and looks like a lot of fun! It will go up for sale at Bonhams’ upcoming Spa Classic sale on the 24th of May, 2015. Head to the official Bonhams website here for more information.

Ex-Alan Jones Davison Formula 5000

Photography by Chris Nicholls

Take a few moments and spend them with this glorious ex-Alan Jones Lola Formula 5000, the car which claimed four out of the Formula 5000 five races in the 2015 Phillip Island Classic.

The car was originally purchased in 1974 by Guy Edwards, who ran it in the United Kingdom’s Formula 5000 series. It began its life wrapped in an Encyclopaedia Brittanica livery, changing later to cigarette company Embassy’s livery.

Ex-Alan Jones Davison Formula 5000

Edwards was successful racing the car, and sold it on to Teddy Yip at the start of the 1976 season. Yip took the car to the United States, where Alan Jones and Patrick Tambay drove it. For some reason each driver only did one race in the car (two in total).

In 1977, Yip came to Australia with Jones to race a newer Lola in the local series, but come the second round at Surfers Paradise, Jones wrote the car off. The T332 was then flown in as a spare and Jones used it successfully during the rest of the season, including lapping the field in Adelaide to take the win.

Ex-Alan Jones Davison Formula 5000

Jon Davison bought the car directly from Theodore Racing at the end of the ’77 season, racing it in Australia until the Formula 5000 category reached its conclusion in 1981. It passed through a number of hands in the ’80s until Richard Davison purchased it at the end of 1989 and undertook an immaculate 20-year restoration.

It would be 2011 before the car raced again. James Davison drove it at Phillip Island in March and followed up with an appearance at the Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park a week later.

The car set a lap record at the Phillip Island Classic in 2012 and took pole at Sandown in November 2012 and Phillip Island in 2013 with Richard Davison on board.

Ex-Alan Jones Davison Formula 5000

Unfortunately, one of the original engines used over the past few years suffered numerous problems, including breaking three camshafts, before finally dumping all its coolant during a race at Phillip Island. This lead to a completely new motor being built (albeit with period ancillaries) to F5000 specs by Synergy Race Engines in Dandenong, Victoria. Thanks to the more modern off-the-shelf parts used, even in genuine F5000 spec, the car now puts out between 50-80hp more than original, in the region of 535hp and 445lb/ft of torque.

Ex-Alan Jones Davison Formula 5000

Richard Davison’s eldest son Alex drove the car this year at Phillip Island, winning four out of the five races. Only a lack of downforce in a wet race allowed Paul Stubber’ ex-Vern Schuppan March 81C ground effect Indycar to nab a win.

Sir Stirling Moss’ Porsche RS-61 Heading to Auction

Bonhams will put Sir Stirling Moss’ delightful Porsche RS-61 up for auction at their Goodwood Festival of Speed Sale on the 26th of July, 2015.

“Just super cars – beautifully balanced and simply tailor-made for such races as the mighty Targa Florio around 440 miles of Sicilian mountain roads. That was one morning when I woke up and really could say to myself, For today’s race you have got the ideal car.” – Sir Stirling Moss via Bonhams

Stirling Moss 1961 Porsche RS61 Sports-Racing

Moss was bang on, of course – these cars won the Targa Florio in 1956, ’59 and ’60. In ’61 he and Graham Hill raced an RS60 with a larger 2-litre in the event. They led the first four laps with Moss at the wheel but would drop back some 76 seconds behind Ferrari during Hill’s stint. Less than 10km from the finnish Moss had brought them back into the lead by over a minute and was set to claim a lap record when the transmission failed.

Stirling Moss 1961 Porsche RS61 Sports-Racing

At the Nurburgring 1000 Kilometres the pair would be behind the wheel of a Porsche RS-61. They charged at the start thanks to a slick track, but were gobbled up by powerful Ferraris when the track dried. It would be another storm-to-the-front thriller as snow began to fall and the pair fought back through the field.. right up until, as Moss recalls: “I was set to take the lead when the little car broke – but it had been exciting while it lasted.”

Stirling Moss 1961 Porsche RS61 Sports-Racing

No doubt thanks to these thrilling adventures Moss developed an affection for these little Porsches, and when he encountered this car, chassis 718-070, he bought it.

He raced it at the Le Mans Classic, and then again for his last competitive race before retirement in the United States.

Stirling Moss 1961 Porsche RS61 Sports-Racing

The car was originally delivered to leading Porsche specialist Bob Holbert in Pennsylvania in 1961. He raced it in Sports Car Club of America East Coast events, before selling it to Tom Payne. Payne would continue to race on the East Coast, as did third owner Millard Ripley. This trio clocked some 13 wins and 20 podiums in SSCA National Competition in the little Porsche.

And all of that was in just two years! The car retired in 1963 and remained complete and original. It was restored for vintage racing in 1969 – before the decade was even out! Andy Prill completed another very thorough rebuild more recently, bringing it into race ready condition.

Stirling Moss 1961 Porsche RS61 Sports-Racing

This is a stunning little machine, owned by a true legend of the sport, and we hope to see it continue its racing career with its new owner. It will head to auction at Bonhams’ upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed sale on the 26th of July, where it’s estimated to fetch between £1.7m and £2m.

For more information head to Bonhams’ official website here.

Video: Fiat 1100 by Stanguellini – an Italian Sports Car Jewel

Fiat 1100 by Stanguellini

Fabrizio Lorenzoni grew up watching race car driving heroes storm the streets outside his family home as they chased victory in the Parma – Poggio di Berceto. In the ’50s his father purchased a Fiat 1100 by Stanguellini, bringing a part of that racing history into the family home.

The family remain custodians of that Italian sports car jewel to this day, and the latest short film from Petrolicious tells their story.

“When I race, dressing the way drivers did in those days, I feel like I’m one of them.. although they were crazy and I’m a bit more calm.”

The Fiat 1100 by Stanguellini began its life in 1948 as a racing car, and spent its early days competing in classic events like the Targa Florio, Giro di Toscana, Grand Prix of Rome and Grand Prix of Naples.

Lorenzoni’s father bought it not to race, but to take a simple pleasure from the honour of owning such a car and having it waiting for him in his own garage. So, from 1955 when he bought it until 1977 the Italian jewel rested quietly in the garage.

In 1977 an event was held to commemorate the Parma – Poggio di Berceto. The organisers sought the family and the car out, and Fabrizio took the car for its first racing outing in more than two decades. They raced alongside Formula 1 greats like Lauda, Fittipaldi and Regazzoni, and the car’s second racing career was born.

It’s a beautiful story, told masterfully by the crew at Petrolicious. Hit play on the video!

Hop on board with Eric Bernard for a nicely-pinned qualifying lap of Silverstone ahead of the 1990 British Grand Prix.

Bernard had put his Larrousse Lola-Lamborghini at the head of the field in pre-qualifying for the 1990 British Grand Prix, ahead of Aguri Suzuki in the sister car.

Qualifying itself would introduce some quick cars and quicker drivers to the field. Nigel Mansell would go on to set pole in his Ferrari ahead of Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger in their McLaren Hondas. Bernard put in an impressive effort, qualifying 8th and going on to finish well in the points in 4th.

This is great footage, presented well, with that stunning ’90s Formula 1 howl for a soundtrack and some good commentary for colour. Get on board with it!

Garry Leggatt finished dead last in the 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500, driving a Fiat 850 Sport Coupe. It was a glorious motorsport moment; exactly the kind which we love to celebrate here. Read on, and find out why.

For starters, he drove the race, his first Hardie-Ferodo 500, solo. More than six hours in the driver’s seat to wring 101 laps of Bathurst’s treacherous turns out of his little Fiat.

He also did it on next-to-no money, in the smallest-engined car in the entire field. And although he was the last car over the line – at least he crossed it, when some twenty five other entries did not.

At the other end of the field was a young Peter Brock, who claimed the first of his nine wins on The Mountain in a HDT Torana GTR XU-1.

Fiat 850 Sport Coupe: Bathurst on borrowed tyres, a sandwich, a Coke and 8000 rpm! tells the pair’s stories and contrasts two very different journeys that led to similarly satisfying achievements. Enjoy it here, thanks to our friends at the Shannons Club here.

Porsches and a Mustang Duel at Road Atlanta

What happens when a 1973 Porsche 911 RSR 3.0L, 1974 Porsche 911 RSR 3.0L and Cobra Automotive Shelby Mustang GT350 get together at Road Atlanta’s The Mitty for a spot of classic racing action?

Pure motorsport gold!

This video picks up in the final three laps of a Group 5 race at The Mitty, with the two Porsches and the Mustang at each other’s throats for seventh place. Yves Scemama and Mike Banz are piloting the Porsches and doing glorious motorsport battle with the GT350 of Moore/Bentley.

The cameras are on board the two Porsches, which provides a great perspective of the cars sliding around searching for grip and track position as they swap between seventh, eighth and ninth and duck and weave their way through slower traffic.

The racing is incredibly clean, which is quite something seeing as the drivers aren’t leaving an inch on the table as they deal with each other, and everyone else. And Road Atlanta – what a track!

Hit play and enjoy one of the most exciting races we’ve seen in a long time.
