HSR at Sebring: Historic racers band together

Sebring HSRThe 2013 HSR Sebring event breaks records, and the heart warming story of racers coming together in support of a friend.

December is a great time to go racing in Florida.

999211_621706467892468_645102416_nSebring International raceway hosted the HSR Sebring Historic Races presented by Alan Jay on Dec 5-8th, 2013. A record 200 cars showed up to participate in sprint races, enduros, night races and a 4 hour race on Sunday.

1501806_622665367796578_201155488_nAnchoring the event was the magnificent Porsche 935 JLP HD1. This car is a tribute to John Paul Jr – winner of the 12 Hours in 1982 and the youngest IMSA champion ever, who is currently suffering from Huntingtons Disease. Multiple time Sebring winner and racing legend Brian Redman asked a few of his friends to come and drive the car, and the response by drivers who competed with and against John Paul Jr was truly inspiring.

A partial list of those in attendance includes Rob Dyson, Roger Mandeville, Dorsey Schroeder, Jim Pace, David Hobbs, Dave White, Jochen Mass, Hurley Haywood, John Fergus and, AC/DC’s Brian Johnson. The Porsche 935 JLP HD1 is a way to bring attention to this debilitating disease.

1464104_621901601206288_1193744222_nFast becoming an HSR tradition the Saturday drivers panel entertained all in attendance with daring tales of past races at Sebring.

1453370_621706471225801_1599446731_nUnique to HSR is the opportunity to watch many of the newer historic cars compete against each other. Here at Sebring fans witnessed Europen Le Mans Prototypes racing against prototypes from different groups and eras such the American Le Mans Series, IMSA GTP and even the Grand Am Daytona Prototypes. Joining these later cars were several Can Am cars and mighty Lola T70′s.
1471305_621901904539591_1738476345_nAn HSR race weekend has something for everyone with full access to the cars and drivers and non stop on track action.

1476115_622668351129613_1409109430_nOf course the highlight for us here at Motorsport Retro was as simple as the chance to be involved in this heart-warming demonstration of comradery. We’d like to wish John Paul JR all the best, as well as his family and friends.

Take a look at the extended gallery by Michael Geng:

1982 MP4/1 driven by Niki Lauda in GermanyMcLaren explain why the MP4/1 was one of the most significant race cars of all time.

The arrival of carbon fiber was a game changer for Formula 1, and not just because it made the cars lighter and faster. In this video McLaren use a stunningly well kept example of their MP4/1 to explain how the ground-breaking material began saving drivers lives.

Paul Oz is a man after our own hearts. A magnificent artist, his exhibitions are comprised of awesome oil paintings which pluck subjects from the pages of motorsport’s history and legends of pop culture.

Taking full advantage of the textural qualities of oil paints, his works explode from the canvas with character and power. He captures the energy, personality and passion of great people with aplomb and his works are instantly compelling.

We love the renditions of motorpsort legends, such as Ayrton Senna and James Hunt, but we can’t go past a good Luke Skywalker or Batman either.

And I can’t remember ever having seen a cooler rendition of a Ford 7610 tractor.

Check ‘em out here, and make sure to head to his site here for more information and to order prints or originals. You can also follow him on Facebook here.

Lister Chevrolet

Born in the wake of the legendary Lister Jaguars, which dominated late-’50s sportscar racing, this beautiful Lister is eligible for historic racing events around the world and up for sale at DK Engineering.

Known as the ‘Knobbly’ thanks to the wheel-clearing bulges in their aluminium bodies, these Listers are cut from the same cloth as the famous Lister Jaguars, which were developed after a devastating fire at the Jaguar competitions department in ’57 saw Jaguar retire from international racing and make D-Type motors available to customers.

Lister Chevrolet

These cars featured a chassis adapted for the D-Type motor, with wider-diameter tubing to handle the new motor’s impressive output. While they were known for the D-Type configuration, the Listers of this period were also available with a three-litre version of the D-Type motor, a three-litre six cylinder Maserati motor and an Chevrolet V8.

Originally delivered to the United States, this particular car rocks a Chevrolet V8 up front, has been markedly successful in historic motorsport and was at one point in its life raced successfully by Stuart Graham, the only man to have won the TT racing both cars and bikes.

Lister Chevrolet

It’s in great condition having recently received a nut and bolt rebuild and a service and preparation for historic racing. Eligible for historic events around the world, this will make a lucky new owner very happy.

honda-insight-crashWhen things go wrong at 200mph, things really go wrong.

Watch in horror and awe as the Honda Insight of Brian Gillespie rotates end-over-end when a high-speed attempt to break the 200mph goes wrong. Things went amiss as the small car begins to sway, before breaking loose and rendering Brian little more than a passenger. Luckily, adequate safety precautions such as the fitment of an extensive roll cage and Brian’s own HANS device meant that he survived.

Renault Espace F1 In 1995, Renault built something truly mad.

The Renault Espace F1 was more than just a family van with an engine swap, it was actually a one-off carbon fiber chassis fitted with a matching carbon version of the Espace’s bodywork, custom suspension work, carbon-ceramic brakes and the entire running gear from a 1993 Renault RS5 F1 car.

Renault Espace F1 inside cabinThe engine from the 1993 RS5 was a 3.5L, 40-valve naturally aspirated V10 which made around 700hp, however it was a couple of years old – so Renault thought they’d bring it back up to speed by tuning in a total of 800hp. It accelerated from 0-100km/h (62mph) in just 2.8 seconds, however it’s the almost race-car like handling which really grabs our attention.

Renault Espace F1 carThis video showcases Alain Prost putting the machine through it’s paces. Car companies were more fun back then! We’ve set the video up so it starts right from the action for you, however feel free to rewind the clip if you’d like to see an introduction to the car.
