F5000 On boardRide on board with David Purley in his F5000 car around Oulton Park, Good Friday 1975.

This terrific period piece takes us back to 1975, as we ride around Oulton Park in David Purley’s Chevron B30 F5000 car. The film was shot during Purley’s break from Formula 1, during which he raced both Formula 2 and F5000. Purley was particularly good behind the wheel of the F5000, winning the British Championship in the following year.

News: Schumacher in critical condition

Barrich-Schum_2002_USA_01_PHCMichael Schumacher lies in a coma with critical head injuries following a skiing accident in France.

We’re big Schumacher fans here at Motorsport Retro, so it was with horror that we received the news that the seven-time F1 Champion had been involved in a serious accident whilst skiing in the French Alps. Our concerns have now turned to prayer with word that his condition has deteriorated to ‘critical’.

The now 44-year old racing hero was air-lifted to Moutiers hospital immediately following the accident, however has been quickly transferred to the Grenoble hospital and has undergone emergency surgery. Grenoble features surgeons who specialize in brain injuries, and doctors have confirmed that despite having been conscious and outwardly suggesting that his injuries were not life threatening, Michael has now fallen into coma.

We can only hope that the same relentless spirit the saw him win five consecutive Formula 1 World Championships will see him through his injuries and back on the road to recovery. His 45th birthday is this Friday.

Keep fighting Schuey!!

Pure intentions, pure handling, pure sound – The legendary E30 M3

The Legendary E30 M3

When no less a man than Jean Alesi describes a car as the sweetest-handling machine he can think of, you sit up and take notice.  Here is a man whose Quixotic career was defined by his passion for making cars go faster than they had any right to do – usually because they should never have left the designer’s notepad.  Small wonder, therefore, that he appreciates the work of unbridled genius that is the BMW M3.

Schlesser ended up behind the wheel after team-mate John Surtees refused to drive the new chassis, opting for the earlier shape on the grounds that the most recent model was unsafe. 1986 Porsche 962 Race Car

Images thanks to RM Auctions, by Pawel Litwinski

This stunning ’86 Porsche 962 went up for auction at RM Auctions’ August Monterey sale and reached a high bid of $650,000.

With a 2,869 cc DOHC air-cooled flat six that puts out horses in the region of 680 and streamlined aerodynamic bodywork that’ll have it slipping through the air while simultaneously being shoved into the ground at the huge speeds its capable of, this immaculate machine embodies the glory of Group C sportscar racing.

1986 Porsche 962 Race Car

Delivered new to Dyson Racing in 1986 and debuting in the Watkins Glen Continental 500, this car’s period motorsport career was exceptionally short, and that’s actually the thing which makes it special.

Much of its time with Dyson Racing was spent as a backup chassis, and when its current owner bought it in 1992 he held it in storage until the mid-2000s, when he commissioned a full restoration for it. That restoration was one of the most exhaustive, complete to nut-and-bolt, restorations ever seen for a 962, and the car is now not only immaculate, but original and completely race-ready.

Enjoy it in the gallery below.
