Brutal noise: Full throttle in an RX-3 touring car

rx3incarLeaving Porsches, Corvettes and Mustangs in it’s wake, this GT3-spec RX-3 sounds phenomenal. The car in question is Gordon Zadie’s 1973 GT-3, a 920kg with-driver featherweight, equipped with a carburetor-fed 12A bridge-ported engine which sounds absolutely beautiful, despite being restricted by 40mm chokes. With a tube frame and substantial suspension work, it’s a quick little chassis too. This clip was shot at a 2013 Walter Mitty / HSR event at Road Atlanta with driver Jeff Dernehl at the wheel.

1967-Le-Mans-winning-Ford-GT-40-Mark-IVA story of preservation and respect, surrounding the beautiful GT40 in which Dan Gurney and A.J Foyt won the 1967 Le Mans 24hr.

Recently on our Facebook page we discussed the merits of restoration versus preservation, which was sparked by the Cisitalia video we’d run. Many of you felt that to restore a car with significant racing history was to wipe away it’s story, and steralise it’s character – something the 1967 Le Mans 24hr had plenty of. We wholeheartedly agree, and it seems the folks over at the Henry Ford Museum do too – as this video sees them hand over their treasured ’67 Le Mans winning GT40 in search of repairs following some unfortunate damage suffered in transport. The question has to be asked – how does one repair a car’s bodywork whilst preserving its hard-earned battle scars?

Relive a taste of the 1967 Le Mans 24 Hour here:

Australia's fastest VW Fastback

The story of a Type III Volkswagen which took it to the fastest sports sedans in Australia and fought its way to the very top.

Sports sedan racing was getting seriously high-tech in the mid-‘70s, and Byran Thomson’s weapon of choice was a Volkswagen Type III Fastback, into which he plonked a 500BHP Chevrolet fuel-injected V8 from a McLaren Formula 5000.

He spent ’74 and ’75 wheel-to-wheel with Bob Jane in the Marlboro Sports Sedan Series and produced two nail-biting finishes. You can read about their many epic battles in Australia’s fastest VW Fastback: Thommo’s ground-breaking V8 Sports Sedan at the Shannons Club.

Video: Classic TT racing in Belgium

belgianThis fantastic production celebrates the coming together of collectors, riders and enthusiasts at the Belgian Classic TT of 2012.

Take a look at this killer video, shot and edited with top-notch production quality to capture the atmosphere of not only the Belgian Classic 2012 event at which it was filmed, but vintage motorcycle racing as a whole. The modern style of filming teamed with the old-fashioned subject matter makes for an awesome juxtaposition, the result being an engaging clip which doesn’t feel nearly as long as it is.

The clip is typical of modern videos created soley for distribution throughout the internet; it shot on a digital SLR, features a bunch of panning shots and is dropped against a surprisingly varied mix of songs. Although Creedance is a favorite, we enjoyed the effects of the second song “A Real Hero” by artist College, the most. Filmed at a small town called Gedinne, the video sees pre-1972 motorcycles doing what they’ve always done best – go fast, and be damn fun whilst doing it! Enjoy.

7585Watch as 1961 F1 Champion Phil Hill’s son Derek hustles behind the wheel of a real-deal Tipo 151.

Strapped to the roll cage of a $2,000,000 Maserati as Derek Hill fights his way through the crowd at the Goodwood Revival, this video captures some great on-board vintage racing footage. The clip ends with Joe Colasacco finishing the race in what can only be described as a torrential downpour, landing the duo third place overall. Unfortunately this car was involved in an accident at a later event (again with Hill behind the wheel), and we haven’t heard of it since.

We’ve been enjoying Turbo Week here at Motorsport Retro, so we had to stop in and enjoy the home of the most exciting machines that turbos have blown along – Group B rally cars.

This stunning ’84 Peugeot 205 T16 Evolution 1 Group B rally car is heading to auction at Artcurial’s upcoming Salon Rétromobile Paris sale.

1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Evolution

Homologated in 1984, Peugeot’s 205 T16 trounced the opposition in the ’85 World Rally Championship, winning seven of eleven races, taking a constructors’ title, their first, and powering Timo Salonen and Seppo Harjane to the drivers’ title. And they came back in ’86 to do it all again with the Evolution 2, this time with Juha Kankkunen and Juha Piironen taking the drivers’ title.

1984 Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 Evolution

This particular car was part of Peugeot’s factory team and contested two championship rallies in ’85 – the Acropolis Rally, from which it retired with broken steering, and the Argentina Rally in which it finished third driven by the great Carlos Reutemann and JF Fauchille. It was restored in ’86 after a season of racing and was kept by Peugeot until 2008.

The car was recommissioned in 2008, and now represents a great opportunity as an extraordinary page in rally history with a significant motorsport history – a true legend of the turbo era.

Head to Artcurial’s site here for the full details.

Schumacher Ferrari F300

US$1.7 million. That’s what it costs to buy a seat in an ex-Schumacher F300. For this car, at this point in time, at least.

Generating dual rounds of applause, one in response to the aural treat of it revving on the auction block, and a second as a gesture of support for Schumacher and his family, the car took just four minutes to go from US$0 to US$1,700,000.

A car which signified Ferrari winding up to utterly dominate Formula 1, with Schumacher at the wheel, this machine is one of just nine and was instrumental in Ferrari and Schumacher’s testing for the ’98 season. Its V10 Tipo 47 delivers 805 horsepower once you wind it up to 17,500RPM, and it features many of the developments which made Ferrari so strong in the ’00s.

It’s in pristine condition and a hugely-important piece of Ferrari’s Formula 1 history. We hope its new owner has a lot of fun with it!
