We have a little Formula 1 fever going on here at Motorsport Retro, as we celebrate the red lights going out on the first Formula 1 race for 2014. This magnificent 1981 Lotus 87, driven by Nigel Mansel in 1981, is the perfect cure for what ails us and is up for sale at Hall & Hall.
The Lotus 87 was Lotus’ entry for the second half of the 1981 Formula 1 season, and it was spectacular…ly unreliable for Mansell, who only finished three races from ten in the back half of the season, with five retirements technical in nature.
Mansell finished the season with a strong result, however, driving this very car to fourth in the 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix.
Finished in one of the greatest liveries of motorsport – the black and gold John Player Special livery, well-maintained and sold complete with a full set of spares, it’s a great contender in historic motorsport and is very competitive in Historic Formula 1 and the Formula 1 Masters series.
The Lotus 87 may have been cantankerous in its prime, but this car looks like a brilliant drive today and we’re more that a little jealous of its future owner. It’s up for sale at Hall and Hall, and you can head to their website here for the full details.
