July 8th, 1984 – The finish line of the Dallas Grand Prix
Colin Chapman first brought Nigel Mansell into Formula 1 during the 1980 season, four years later he found himself behind the wheel of the potent Renault-powered Lotus 95T. He’d tasted the similar 93 and 94T in 1983, and in 1984 at Dallas he put the 95T on pole – besting team mate Elio de Angelis and the works-Renault driver Derek Warwick.
In the race itself Mansell managed to hold his lead for the entire first half of the race before being overtaken by Kiki Rosberg. Then, three laps before the finish line disaster struck for Mansell – his gearbox suffered a terminal failure. In desperation, he attempted to push the car to the finish line, and ended up being classified in sixth position. He fainted from the effort of doing so.
