The Surtees TS20 was introduced at the Belgian Grand Prix in May 1978 as an answer for the ground effect F1-cars. Let’s take a look at one up close and personal. The TS20 was introduced at the Belgian Grand Prix in May 1978 as an answer for the ground effect F1-cars. As the car was fitted with a flat underbody design, it turned out that Surtees effort wasn´t a match for the latest breed of F1 cars in that particular period.
The car was designed by John Surtees and Ken Sears as a development of the earlier Surtees TS19. Team Surtees built three TS20´s.
Pictured is the TS20-01, driven during the 1978 Formula 1 season by Italian Vittoria Brambilla.
It used an 2.993 cc / 182.6 cu in Ford Cosworth 90° V8, producing 495 bhp, or 369 KW at 10.500 rpm, fitted with a Hewland FGA 6 speed manual gear box.
The car produced a torque of 350 Nm.
Unfortunately Brambilla didn´t score a single point behind this wheel, his best result was a seventh place at the Spanish Grand Prix in Jarama (June 1978).
