Jack Brabham was behind the wheel at the time, and the damage was severe enough that the race was effectively over for the world famous duo before it had even begun. However, the fact still stood that tens of thousands of additional fans had turned out to see Moss and Brabham drive at Bathurst, so the team hastily repaired the car and sent it back out.

The car re-entered the track several hours later, primarily for the purpose of appearances. Moss explained after the race that he was really enjoying driving the car… until the engine expired.
