Putting out an absolutely monstrous five horsepower, surely enough to rival any 935 or 936 we’ve written about, this genuine Porsche 936 Junior is one of the coolest things we’ve seen on our classic motorsport journey.
It’s heading to auction at Bonhams’ upcoming Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale, where you’ll be able to pick it up for an estimated €15,000 – 25,000.
In 1981 Jackie Ickx and Derek Bell won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a factory Porsche 936 sportscar prototype, squeezing out the dual Rondeau M379s of Jacky Haran, Jean-Louis Schlesser and Philippe Streiff and Gordon Spice and François Migault.
Their win was the third for a Porsche 936, and the Christian Dior Jules livery of their car lives on as one of racing’s iconic looks.
Three-time European Rally Champion Sobieslaw Zasada was so inspired by the car that he built a 1:2 scale replica of it. Porsche thought that this was a brilliant idea, and so they built their own!
And that’s what you see here – one of the fifty to one hundred limited edition miniature ‘Junior’ Porsche 936s built by Porsche.
It features a single-cylinder 206cc motor which pumps out five horsepower through a two-speed plus reverse gearbox. At high speeds you have an adjustable rear spoiler to keep everything settled, and can rely on disc brakes to slow everything down again.
It sits on 2-piece alloy wheels and pneumatic tyres which are kept in close contact with the ground by full suspension on all four corners and even hydrolic shock absorbers at the back, features 12-volt electronics including alternator, electric starter, lights, indicators and horn. It even has a leather seat.
All in all, I think it’s probably more advanced than my daily drive!
Un-restored, it’s original and in excellent condition. It includes a Porsche instruction book and an alternative electric motor.
It’s expected to fetch somewhere between €15,000 – 25,000 when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale on the 5th of February. Head to Bonhams’ website here for more information.
