For the muscle car men of the 1960s, achieving the best possible result meant convincing their cars to rocket as quickly as possible to very large numbers of kilometres per hour. When Bruce McPhee prepared to master The Mountain, however, he went the other way.

He worked on convincing his HK Monaro GTS 327 to stop.

The approach makes sense. The Monaro GTS 327 squeezes a 5.4-litre Chevrolet 327 V8, which puts out 250bhp and churns up the track thanks to 440Nm of torque, under the bonnet. Stopping that beast after opening it up for the entirety of Conrod Straight would be no mean feat!

But it was one Bruce McPhee achieved masterfully on his way to conquering Bathurst. Enjoy the story in Holden HK Monaro GTS 327: The Inside Story of how McPhee Mastered The Mountain thanks to our friends at the Shannons Club.
