The 1955 Mille Miglia featured 992 miles (1597 km) of winding Italian roads. The epic road race was won by a 25 years old Sir Stirling Moss and co-driver Denis Jenkinson in just 10 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds at an incredible average speed 98.53 miles per hour (157.6 km/h).
That record, in the mighty Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, remains unbeaten. Moss sums it best “Even today, I think it is still a pretty impressive credential.”
