Garry Leggatt finished dead last in the 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500, driving a Fiat 850 Sport Coupe. It was a glorious motorsport moment; exactly the kind which we love to celebrate here. Read on, and find out why.
For starters, he drove the race, his first Hardie-Ferodo 500, solo. More than six hours in the driver’s seat to wring 101 laps of Bathurst’s treacherous turns out of his little Fiat.
He also did it on next-to-no money, in the smallest-engined car in the entire field. And although he was the last car over the line – at least he crossed it, when some twenty five other entries did not.
At the other end of the field was a young Peter Brock, who claimed the first of his nine wins on The Mountain in a HDT Torana GTR XU-1.
Fiat 850 Sport Coupe: Bathurst on borrowed tyres, a sandwich, a Coke and 8000 rpm! tells the pair’s stories and contrasts two very different journeys that led to similarly satisfying achievements. Enjoy it here, thanks to our friends at the Shannons Club here.
