The Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of NSW held their second historic race meeting of 2018, the Spring Festival, over the weekend of the 22nd & 23rd of September. The meeting brought a magic collection of motor racing machinery to Wakefield Park, located in the picturesque countryside of Goulburn, for a packed weekend of historic motorsport
The Spring Festival featured a new category in historic Sports Sedans, as well as historic sports racing cars and the MG marque.
Historic Sports Sedans are a burgeoning historic group and made their New South Wales debut at the Spring Festival. In their day they were icons of Aussie race tracks, piloted by touring car legends like Allan Moffat, Allan Grice, Jim Richards and John McCormack. Based on production cars, they were identifiable for the fans, but under the hood they packed a punch and were developed to push boundaries.
The field that competed at the Spring Festival included a few recreations as well as cars from the period, like the 1970 Ford Escort Mark 1 V8 of Garry Ford, an Austin A30 with a Datsun S2000 motor and speedway mechanical fuel injection system and a Turbo Datsun Stanza Coupe with a factory LZ20T from Nissan’s Group 5 sports car program.
The Sports Racing field also put on some great races, and it’s awesome to see (and hear) the big cars working at race pace. At the pointy end of the field there’s a great rivalry developing between two young guns, Daniel Nolan piloting the Nola Chev and Tom Tweedie in the Elfin MS7, which is resulting in some exciting dices and pushing the performance of the cars ever forward.
Elsewhere in the field, the tin top categories of Groups S & N were responsible for some magic racing – particularly throughout the bumper field of Group S cars. The Formula Ford and Formula Vee grids are always closely-matched and tend to remain so throughout the progress of their races, producing exciting multi-car battles throughout the grid.
As always, the pits and paddock were full of interesting machinery and friendly people, making them a great place to take a break from the racing and explore.
