Cruise into 2018’s end-of-year festivities with a widescreen gallery of Spice SE89C chassis 002 thanks to Marcel Hundscheid of Speed-O-Graphica.
Gordon and Derek Spice founded Spice Engineering during the early 80s. Gordon Spice was a former British sports car and touring car racer. He raced during the ’60s and ’70s before starting Spice Engineering.
Initially Spice Engineering used Tiga sports cars in the World Sportscar Championship, but from 1986 they started constructing their own cars. The Spice SE89C was one of several sports cars designed by Graham Humphrey. Spice Engineering offered this car for use in both the C2 as well as the C1 category.
The SE89C that appeared in 1989 was based on the earlier SE88C and powered by a 3,491 cc Ford Cosworth DFZ that developed 549 bhp at 9500 revs per minute. The car had a weight of 750 kg. Spice Engineering constructed six cars including chassis 002 pictured here.
Chassis 002 was delivered to Graff Racing in 1989 and equipped with a 3.3-litre Ford Cosworth DFL. Its best result was 19th place in the 1989 Le Mans 24 Hours, where it was driven by French drivers Jean-Philippe Grand, Remy Pochauvin and Jean-Luc Roy.
