Last weekend, Hockenheim hosted the 16th edition of the Bosch Hockenheim Historic – The Jim Clark Revival 2021. Motorsport Retro’s European correspondent was at the scene and created this report and gallery.
With COVID-19 putting a big line through the event last year and the original date in May also not met due to restrictions, the historic motorsport community was thrilled that the organization managed to put together this annual historic motorsport festival at the end of August. Almost 20,000 fans visited the Hockenheimring over the weekend to see around 500 participants compete in twelve racing series.
The programme’s feature event was the Group C Super Cup. Back in 1986, the German DRM championship (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) was replaced by the Supercup created by the ADAC. Remarkably, only Group C cars were used within Germany. The championship lasted until 1989.
After a period of around 36 years, Group C was last weekend back at the Hockenheimring. Unfortunately due to Covid19 just a few cars were present, but were nevertheless an experience.
Besides the revived Group C Supercup, Touring Car Classics, Historic Racecar Association, FHR HTGT for the Dunlop Trophy, Historic Formula Vau Europe, the CanAM & Sportscars, GT Classics, Youngtimer Touring Car Challenge, Dunlop Gentle Drivers ’65, Battle of the Dwarfs and the VFV GLPPro filled the grids.
Traditionally, runs of the Association Raceclub Germany rounded off the unique spectrum on the route. The “Black & Gold Collection” from ChromeCars celebrated an exclusive world premiere, offering a real feast for the senses with its exquisite Lotus Formula 1 vehicles and an LMP2 during presentation drives.
For the tenth time, the design awards in the categories of best GT, prototype and formula vehicle took place as part of the Bosch Hockenheim Historic. The expert jury consisted of three-time Le Mans winner Marco Werner, ChromeCars managing director Kai Nieklauson and Ring managing director Jochen Nerpel. Wolfgang Ziegler’s Trabant 601 RS, which was also driven by racing legend Roland Asch, the Gebhardt JC 853 from Michael Herich and the Larrousse F1 from Dr. Jochen Gaa took home prizes.
This year’s event saw several very interesting cars track side. Let´s take a closer look at some those beauties.
The first chassis of the Porsche 917-10 was owned for 35 years by Porsche’s main test driver Willy Kauhsen. Originally meant as a development car, it underwent several updates to both chassis and bodywork. In the end, the bodywork was similar to a 917/10K.
Kauhsen bought the car in 1972 and raced it around the world in the livery that saw action last weekend in Hockenheim. From 2012 the car was converted back to its original configuration.
In Hockenheim, chassis 001 appeared in the capable hands of Danish driver Casper Elgaard. Remarkably, the headlights that weren’t fitted in the 917/10K configuration. As the cars nowadays appears in the Classis Enduracing Racing series from Peter Auto, where headlights are mandatory under the Peter Auto rules.
The ATS D5 was a Formula 1 car originally driven by the late Manfred Winkelhock. ATS was owned by German Günter Schmid and was originally a company that specialised in lightweight wheels. During the ’70s he entered Grand Prix Racing.
Two D5s, in fact upgraded HGS1s, were entered for the 1981 and 1982 Formula 1 World Championship. The earlier HGS1 was designed by Hervé Guilpin and Tim Wadrop, as Don Holliday upgraded the car into the D5 for 1982. At the Bosch Hockenheim Historic the fully restored D5 was driven by Walter Lais and entered in Racing Club Germany.
New in Group C Racing is this splendid Gebhardt C88 recently restored by Gebhardt Motorsport. The car is powered by an Audi 5 cylinder turbo motor, in fact, the same engine used in Audi’s Group B rally car.
The car pictured here is chassis JC873, that originally saw life as 872/1. Back in 1988 the car evolved into the C88 C2 that was entered during the Group C Supercup. Chassis JC873 underwent a 30 month overhaul before it was debuted at the Monza Historic in 2019. During the Group C Supercup at the Hockenheim Historic the car was driven by multiple former Le Mans winner Marco Werner.
Another fine of piece of Group C hardware was this Mazda 757, chassis 103, owned and driven by Swiss local Mazda dealer Edi Taveri. Powered by a 450 horsepower Mazda 13G R3 1962 cc rotary engine, the car saw originally life as chassis 003 in 1986 but was rebuilt and in the end renumbered chassis 103.
At the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1987 it was running under the IMSA-spec GTP class and raced by David Kennedy, Mark Galvin and Pierre Dieudonné who claimed victory in the GTP category.
From Holland, the popular YTCC series filled the grid with a wide variety of nearly 50 cars including several BMW M1s, different Porsches, American muscle cars such as the Dodge Challenger and Plymouth Barracuda, BMW M3s, Ford Escorts and many more.
Thirty four former DTM and STW touring cars found their way to Hockenheim, including legendary DTM racers like Kris Nissen, Armin Hahne, Harald Grohs and Rene Ruch. A vast field over 30 BMW M3s, BMW E36s, Mercedes 190, Audi A4, BMW E21, Volvo 850 T5s etc entertained the crowds.
A big compliment goes to the organisation behind the Bosch Hockenheim Historic. We’re already looking forward to the 17th edition of this great event to be beld from 6-8 May 2022.
