This stunning ’86 Porsche 962 went up for auction at RM Auctions’ August Monterey sale and reached a high bid of $650,000.
With a 2,869 cc DOHC air-cooled flat six that puts out horses in the region of 680 and streamlined aerodynamic bodywork that’ll have it slipping through the air while simultaneously being shoved into the ground at the huge speeds its capable of, this immaculate machine embodies the glory of Group C sportscar racing.
Delivered new to Dyson Racing in 1986 and debuting in the Watkins Glen Continental 500, this car’s period motorsport career was exceptionally short, and that’s actually the thing which makes it special.
Much of its time with Dyson Racing was spent as a backup chassis, and when its current owner bought it in 1992 he held it in storage until the mid-2000s, when he commissioned a full restoration for it. That restoration was one of the most exhaustive, complete to nut-and-bolt, restorations ever seen for a 962, and the car is now not only immaculate, but original and completely race-ready.
