Video: Chris Harris Drives an F1 Car

“You’ll think, God, I couldn’t possibly go any faster because it’s sliding at this speed even. Whereas in fact, once you burst through that and get the tyres and brakes working, you’ll just be staggered at how much grip it’s got.”

A drive in a Formula One car is an experience that really piques my curiosity. My heart wants a seat in something from the ’80s, ideally, but the sheer potential of the cars from the ’90s and ’00s is intriguing to me.

Chris Harris has a crack at it in this video, hopping into Mark Webber’s old Jaguar R5 for a few laps around Silverstone. It features some great on-track adventuring and comment on what it’s like to drive a Formula One car of that era, but the real highlight for me is the brilliant discussions with Martin Brundle.

Vintage Racing Today

“Rather than put their race cars behind museum velvet ropes, these car owners have opted to race their historic cars the way they were designed and purposed…at over 100 mph around world- famous race tracks.”

Vintage Racing Today, directed by Ben Cissell, is a feature-length documentary which delves into the depths of vintage racing to see what makes it all tick, promote it to the world and celebrate beautiful old cars duking it out on the track.

When director Ben Cissell attended his first ever historic meet, the Gold Cup at Virginia International Raceway in 2009, the spark was set in his heart and he began capturing footage that would eventually become Vintage Racing Today. He began by following Zapata Racing, but the project quickly grew within the community to feature all of its many aspects, and many different events.

The DVD’s recently been released for an eminently reasonable $25, and looks to be well worth a watch for anyone into the historic racing scene. To the Christmas lists!

Enjoy the extended trailer below, and head to the Vintage Racing Today website here to pick up a copy and learn more about it.

Harley-Davidson XR750TT

One of just ten factory-built Harley-Davidson racers from 1972, this XR750TT Race Bike is both significant and stunning.

Harley Davidson factory rider and all-round legend Cal Rayborn used an XR750TT to win three out of the six races in 1972′s Trans-Atlantic Match Races, competing on British tracks on which he’d never raced before. He also produced Harley-Davidson’s first AMA Grand National road race victory on an XR750 TT at the legendary Laguna Seca.

This particular machine was part of the US road circuit campaign and its owners, Warr’s Harley-Davidson, have restored it stunningly to its original specification, complete with Cal Rayborn’s period racing colours.

It recently won the ‘Important Competition Machines’ class at Europe’s prestigious Salon Privé Concours d’Elegance.

To close on a note about bravery – that little leather pouch on the fuel tank is a chin-pad, there for the riders to rest on as they cuddled up as close as possible and pushed the bike flat out down the straight bits.

Subaru World Rally Team

The Subaru World Rally Team will be fondly remembered as the Japanese marques factory squad in the WRC. The initial team was founded way back in 1980; but most fans will remember the “blue and yellow” glory days of the 1990s, after Prodrive took control of Subaru’s works rally operations in 1989.

subaru impreza

The Subaru team utilised “all-wheel drive technology” in the World Rally Championship and achieved incredible success by winning the Manufacturers’ Championship in 1995, 1996, 1997 and the Drivers’ Championship in 1995, 2001 and 2003. The victories help establish Subaru as a performance brand and in doing so the Subaru Impreza WRX achieved cult status amongst car enthusiasts.

Team History

Subaru entered rallying with the humble Subaru Leone at the Safari Rally in 1980. The team achieved achieved its best result with Possum Bourne taking third at the 1987 Rally New Zealand. Subaru then entered its first Prodrive developed car, the Group A Subaru Legacy RS in the 1990 season, piloted by Finnish driver Markku Alén. Over the next two years the team enjoyed numerous top five finishes on the world stage and Colin McRae also won the British Rally Championship in 1991 and 1992.

Subaru leone

For the 1993 World Rally Championship season, the Subaru team debuted its now distinctive blue and yellow color scheme along with a new title sponsor, 555. Ari Vatanen and Colin McRae remained the primary drivers. McRae took the first win for Subaru, at the eighth event of the season, Rally New Zealand, the last outing for the Group A Subaru Legacy rally cars. At the next event, Rally Finland, Subaru debuted their new Prodrive developed Group A Impreza rally car, known as the Impreza 555.

The Impreza Era – World Champions

In 1994, Carlos Sainz took the Impreza 555 to its first win at the Acropolis Rally in Greece with the Spainiard finishing second in the drivers championship and Subaru also second in the manufacturers.

1994 1000 Lakes Rally Subaru Impreza Carlos Sainz

For the 1995 season, the primary drivers remained Sainz in the number 5 car and McRae in the number 4 car. Sainz’s first place finish in Catalunya left he and McRae tied for points going into the last event of the season, the RAC Rally Great Britain.McRae won out, taking first place at his home event, clinching his first and only Driver’s Championship, a first for the Subaru team. Sainz finished close behind in second place, giving him second in the Championship, and third driver Richard Burns finished in third place, giving the team a second consecutive 1–2–3 finish. Between McRae and Sainz the team managed to win five of the season’s eight rallies for Subaru, winning the team its first Constructors Championship. At the end of the season, Sainz left Subaru to join Ford World Rallye Sport.

Richard Burns, Colin McRae and Carlos Sainz.

Sales of Impreza road cars exploded, with drivers relishing the grip, power and prestige of the World Championship winning brand.

Championship winning form continued for Subaru from 1996-2003 with the team winning the manufactures championship again in 1996 and 1997. The late Richard Burns and co-driver Robert Reid won the drivers championship in 2001. Petter Solberg fought a tough battle with Sebastian Loeb in 2003 and secured Subaru’s last drivers championship by a single point.

Solberg continued to lead the team through the difficult seasons of 2004-2008 before the team withdrew from competition on 16 December 2008.

Impreza WRX

There have been seven versions of the WRX so far, with the mid to late nineties versions being called modern classics by the motoring media. The STI (Subaru Tecnica International) versions of the Impreza WRX were launched from 1994 originally only in the Japanese market.  These upgraded versions of the WRX have proved extremely popular with collectors due to the factory tuned engines, suspensions and transmissions.

Future Imprezas

The Imprezas are still considered by many to be the most desireable cars available, for their unique combination of performance, practicality and Rally heritage. An offer of Subaru cars, the early Imprezas have created a standard that the future models will have to live up to. If the track record demonstrates anything, its that success on the rally stages, leads to success on the showroom floor.

At the peak of their sportscar racing domination, Porsche’s works Rothmans team’s boycotted the 1984 24 Hours of Le Mans, due to a disagreement over changes in fuel regulations. A Porsche would go on to win the race anyway, but it left works driver Derek Bell, in the hunt for his fourth Le Mans win, short of a seat for the legendary race.

This short film picks up at that race, and profiles the great Derek Bell during the golden age of sportscar racing.

Exclusive, exquisite and desirable, the release each year of the Pirelli calendar is a landmark occasion. It brings together the world’s most beautiful models and most inspirational photographers to create an article of beauty.

It’s a motoring institution.

This year Steve McCurry, the photographer responsible for the iconic Afghan Girl, was given the task of shooting the calendar, and he took it in a completely different direction.

Unfortunately, the recipients of the 2013 Pirelli calendar will not be viewing any nude photos. “When I told the models there would be no nudity, some of them were disappointed,” said casting director Jennifer Starr……..If the models are disappointed that there won’t be any nudity, you better believe the customers won’t be too thrilled either.

Enjoy this behind the scenes video, check out last year’s calendar here, and the 2010 edition here  (warning both the 2010 and 2012 editions, do feature nudity!)

“The fastest thing about the monocoque Lotus is Jimmy Clark”: Ron Tauranac

brabham-bt26a

The headline to this story has been attributed again and again to Ron Tauranac, designer of early Brabham Formula 1 cars. He may or may not have spoken those exact words, but his actions certainly supported that sentiment. Ron Tauranac, you see, was the last designer to field a tube-frame Formula 1 race car.

Rules for the 1970 season made it clear that a tube frame chassis would not comply with the new bag tank requirements. By 1969 all other constructors had moved to a monocoque design – even Ferrari – leaving Brabham alone running the welded, rather than folded and riveted, chassis.

Ickx Brabham BT26A

Brabham updated its year-old BT26 model – designed around the larger Repco engine – to accommodate the smaller, more powerful and reliable Ford Cosworth DFV for 1969. In what appears to have been a move to cut expenses in a transitional season, the engines were installed within the frame rails as the Repco had been – obviating a key advantage of the fully-stressed Cosworth V-8. And instead of shortening the wheelbase of the BT29, Tauranac simply installed the engine further back in the chassis. Not the sort of compromises one would expect to have been made by a potential championship contender.

While one might expect to see a sophisticated mix of small and medium tubes creating a highly intricate chassis like of that of a contemporary Porsche sports prototype racecar, the reality is that the BT26A frame looks more like a scaled-up Formula Ford design than anything else. Low on style points, high on engineering simplicity.

Despite being a year-old chassis design, conceived around a different, larger engine, utilizing a technology felt by many to be completely out-of-date, the BT26A performed extraordinarily well in 1969. Jack Brabham himself sat on pole for the first race of the season at Kyalami, though he DNF’d. In Spain Jacky Ickx finished sixth to pick up the first points for Brabham for the season. At Monaco privateer Piers Courage drove an updated 1968 BT26 to second, while both Brabham and Ickx DNF’d. In Holland both Brabhams again finished in the points, while Ickx took third in France, kicking off a hot streak for the Belgian driver. A second at Silverstone, and pole, race fastest lap, and a win at the Nurburgring moved Ickx into second behind Stewart in the championship.  A one-two for Brabham at the Canadian GP was a highlight for the team that season, with Ickx again capturing the pole and setting the race fastest lap. Courage in his updated BT26 was again on the podium at Watkins Glen, with Brabham fifth and Ickx with a DNF.

piers-courage-montjuilt-brabham-bt26a1

At the final race in Mexico, which was also the final race of tube-frame F1 car eligibility, Jack himself took pole position, Ickx set fastest lap, and Ickx and Brabham finished second and third in that order.  Unfortunately for Ickx, Stewart’s early season form, winning five of six races, made catching the Scot nearly impossible; the Belgian driver forced to settle for second in the Drivers Championship.

Brabham the team was also runner-up in the Constructors Championship, remarkable for a chassis design that was widely assumed to be outdated.  The team finished second only to Jackie Stewart and the very sophisticated Matra, which utilized a complicated, aircraft-type construction method.  In an ironic twist, neither the aerospace-derived Matra nor the simple Brabham could  be fitted with bag tanks, so the two top cars in 1969 were both ineligible to contest World Championship F1 races in 1970.
