Video: The Duel – Rainey vs Schwantz

This video from MotoGP  looks at the incredible fight for supremacy between Americans Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz that lasted throughout the early 90s.

“Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz arrived on the premier class scene in the late 80s, and commenced a personal rivalry which encompassed two very different styles and approaches to racing. Rainey won three consecutive titles with Yamaha from 1990-1992, while Schwantz got the better of his fellow countryman in the 1993 season, taking the World title on a Suzuki. With just under half a century of premier class victories between themselves (Schwantz took 25, Rainey 24) the pair were close competitors, which often led to explosive encounters.”

“This bike is about heart and soul and garage spirit. This bike is all about emotion.” Ola Stenegard – BMW Motorrad

2013 marks the 90th anniversary of the first BMW motorcycle – and the 40th anniversary of the R90S, the iconic machine that transformed BMWs image as a motorcycle manufacturer.

So to celebrate the BMW Motorrad Design guys teamed up with funky custom bike builders Roland Sands Design to create an exclusive tribute to the BMW R90S which was unveiled at Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2013

The result is some feelgood marketing and a really nice bike. One that thankfully has been designed to be ridden.

“It’s an absolute riding machine,” says Roland Sands, “just like the R90/S was in its time.”

Rising Sun Communal Workshop

“You want to learn to work on your bike and modify it. You need space, tools, and someone to teach you. Problem; you live in Sydney with no garage space, and the only place you have to work on your bike is your living room, which is up 5 flights of stairs.”

It’s a problem many of us face, especially as we tend to live more and more in big cities where space comes at a significant premium. And it’s a problem Rising Sun Workshop, Sydney’s first community motorcycle workshop, hopes to solve.

Rising Sun Communal Workshop

But they need your help to get there. The team are employing crowd-funding to get the workshop off the ground and have raised, at time of writing, A$31,501 of their initial A$35,000 goal.

With the A$35, 000 goal reached they will build a communal space that will provide five workshop bays, each with workbenches and a full set of tools. They’ll also be able to equip the workshop with a MIG welder, a basic range of specialist tools, compressed air for each bay and bike storage.

Rising Sun Communal Workshop

If they can stretch to an A$50, 000 goal they’ll be able to provide a TIG welder, metal lathe, drill press, larger range of fabrication and speciality tools, chill out area and Wi-Fi.

Once up and running the workshop will run on an affordable annual membership fee and most tiers of their Pozible page provide access to at least one year of membership.

It’s an idea which we, as fellow bike builders and lovers, are more than happy to get behind and truly hope succeeds! Head to the Rising Sun Workshop Pozible page here for the full information, and to help out!

BMW E24

With ex-Mercedes-Benz designer Paul Bracq at the helm, and some significant racing success in the ‘80s fueling BMW’s legend, BMW’s E24 6-series opened a new chapter in the company’s design philosophy, as well as enjoying great popularity through an impressively long production run.

BMW M1

It all started with Bracq’s 1972 Turbo gull-wing mid-engined concept car, which would eventually become the stunning M1, and to make things interesting it shared more than a few connections to the LJ Torana GTR XU-1.

porsche 911

This one of a kind 1974 911 3.0L RS replica was built to compete at the highest level in Australia’s Tarmac Rally championship. It has done just done 10,000 km since its inception in 2008 and still looks like a newly built car.

A0907837210D42C6BAA41C6FF00C824C
It was based on a factory RHD 1986 911 Carrera (M491 option) wide body with turbo brakes and suspension.
The build was commissioned with the instructions ‘leave no stone unturned’ in every department ie weight reduction, performance etc….

porsche 911
To begin, the chassis was completely stripped and acid dipped to remove every factory coating from the car. All superfluous brackets and the like were removed to save weight, additional chassis strengthening was added where required and a -non sunroof- roof was installed. To meet the highest safety standards a chromoly FIA approved custom fabricated roll cage was installed. The cage was stitched into the A pillars, B pillars and rear suspension strut top mounts to aid chassis stiffness and strength.

0E668AB157674FD1AFC0FDB1C87320BE
To save weight, lightweight GRP front guards, bonnet and Front / Rear bumpers were fitted and finished in Porsche-s iconic signal orange. Then the reassembly and installation of all the expensive bits began.

25BC6A1A8B794A47A5DBCB014AD2C2C0

In the engine department, the car has a twin plug 3.5L engine with PMO carbs and MSD twin ignition making approx 340 HP, mated to a custom set of high flow headers with ‘x’ pipe custom muffler. With this kind of HP pushing only 980 odd KG it makes for an extremely quick car.
Brakes were upgraded to 993 Twin Turbo floating discs front, GT3 rear, dual master cylinder pedal box and hydraulic hand brake.
Suspension consists of MCA coil over shock absorbers with 3 way adjustable remote mounted reservoirs. 935 front A arms and adjustable spring plates, fully adjustable tarrett sway bars.

FAB23CEF525D47FFB5807428A23B8916
Wheels are 17 x ‘ 8 & 10′ custom billet machined ‘Zuffenhaus’ 3 piece Fuchs replicas which are the lightest Fuchs replicas on the market.
Engine lubrication is dry sump with forward mounted oil tank / filter and carbon fibre braided lines running front to rear.
The 915 gearbox is fitted with a set of custom ratios , external trans cooler and is linked to the wevo shifter by wevo precision couplings.

Peter Williams to produce JPN Isle of Man winning Replicas

JPN replica

40 years ago this week Peter Williams, road race legend and motorcycle development engineer accomplished a unique achievement winning the Isle of Man TT on a motorcycle of his own design.

Peter’s engineering designs gave him the advantage on the race track and set the trend for what motorcycles are today. Now exactly four decades later, the highly limited edition Peter Williams Motorcycles’ Replica will celebrate and commemorate Peter’s legendary victory.

Peter Williams Motorcycles is now taking orders for replicas of his 1973 F750 TT-winning John Player Norton. Just 25 of the monocoque-framed Commandos will be built. The original monocoque has passed into biking lore as the machine Williams won the 1973 F750 TT on, lapping at 107.27mph, just off Mike Hailwood’s 1967 outright record on a works Honda. Impressive stuff from an air-cooled, push-rod Commando engine. He was also the highest points scorer in that year’s victorious Transatlantic Trophy team. An innovator throughout his career, Williams can be credited with introducing and establishing the viability of many of the things we now take for granted, including cast wheels, disc brakes and beam frames.

Peter Williams

A stainless steel chassis that formed the fuel tank as well as the frame lent the bike its ‘monocoque’ name. The new replicas will follow the layout of the 1973 bikes, however whereas each original monocoque frame took 12 man-weeks to construct, this time CAD design and CNC laser cutters will improve accuracy and hasten the production process. Engines will be built by renowned Norton specialist Mick Hemmings using all new parts, including Peter’s own cam design. The replicas will feature a host of bespoke parts such as cast magnesium wheels and forks, created from the original ‘70s drawings. Where drawings were not available, new parts have been created by referencing and digitising two of the original race bikes.

John Player Norton

PWM hope that the first of the monocoque replicas will be ready for production in 2013, the 40th anniversary of Williams’ epic Isle of Man win. Just four originals were built and are now valued in excess of £250,000 apiece, putting Williams’ expected £65,000 price tag for the replicas into perspective.

The JPN project was conceived to raise working capital and as a showcase for investment into Williams’ pet project – a modern motorcycle with a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis. He produced the first prototype in conjunction with Lotus, proving the concept. Development is now underway of a new model for low volume production.

Isle of man winner

Peter Williams Motorcycles Ltd. comprises the man himself, Greg Taylor of motorcycle engineering firm GTME and Mark Wells & Ian Wride of design consultancy Xenophya Design. Williams said: “Working with the team brought fresh ideas and a different perspective on how to make the whole monocoque chassis motorcycle project a reality. Starting with the replicas of my 1973 TT-winning bike, we will show investors what we are capable of, and present collectors and enthusiasts with a unique opportunity. “With the 40th anniversary of the TT victory, we have the ideal opportunity to bring the JPN replica to market. We already have a number of interested purchasers. The ‘designed for manufacture’ version will be of equal elegance and efficient function of the original JPN monocoque. As soon as we receive firm orders we can press the button and the new bikes can be created.

Clave's Retro F1 Planes

Planes are awesome. Older planes doubly so! They’re full of interesting texture and detail; panels, curves and rivets, and they make the most magnificent ruckus when they take to the skies.

These particular planes, swathed in retro motorsport liveries by Bill of Clavework Graphics, are something else!

Liveries from Gulf and Rothmans to BAR Honda and Benetton are represented on classic planes like the Hawker Typhoon, Polikarpov I-15 and the English Electric Lightning. It’s an awesome idea, executed spectacularly well!

J&L Fabricating: An Old Fashioned Story

Head to any historic racing weekend and you’ll see the full gamut of classic racers out on the track being pushed to their, and their drivers’, limits. It’s wonderful.

But there’s a lot of tinkering that goes in to getting that classic out onto the track, and keeping it out there performing its best. Wander the pits and paddock, and you’ll see all sorts of machinery in all sorts of undress, being pulled apart, put back together, fixed, and fine tuned. And it happens at all levels – from huge trucks crammed full of specialised personnel and gear, to a lone dude working on his pride and joy with a select set of special tools and a few buddies to help out in a pickle.

And amongst them, are the guys from J &L Fabricating, who provide the knowledge and passion to keep the classic racing machine well-oiled and rolling. This excellent short documentary from eGarage, J&L Fabricating: An Old Fashioned Story, tells their story.
