motorsport watch

If you are looking for a fabulous racing inspired drivers watch look no further than the Chrono Driver Evo by Meccaniche Veloci.

In 1937 Bernd Rosemeyer, driving a Auto-Union type C, set a new record of 406 km/h and Tazio Nuvolari won on the Milanese circuit driving Alfa Romeo 12-C-36 . That same year the first driver’s watch was created, a revolutionary model dedicated to the racing drivers of that time. Featuring a curved dial that allowed the face of the watch to be worn on the inside of the wrist, this configuration allowed you to glance down and check the time with no need to remove one or both hands from the wheel. In the 1940s and the 1950s the most demanding racing drivers chose the “driver’s watch” models featuring a vertical re-oriented dial or noon shifted to the three o’clock position, while in the 1970s there followed watches featuring a digital display showing hours and minutes.

he veloci

Meccaniche Veloci channeled those early drivers and designers energy to create the Chrono Driver Evo. It is a model halfway between a recollection of a roaring past and a reinterpretation of the time concept: not linear, but definitely skewed to the advanced.  The Chrono Driver Evo most obvious feature is a balancing case protected by a curved profile frame called a brancard. This limited Edition represents the natural and exclusive evolution of a driver’s watch as created by many watchmaking designers of the last century. They share indeed a dynamic style and a pursuit for exclusivity.

race watch

With the choice of models of constructed of either Titanium or Carbon Fiber, the Chrono Driver Evo by Meccaniche Veloci is the epitome of design, mechanics and precision inspired by the past while conjuring the future. The perfectly polished and satin-finish surfaces of the case and brancard exalt the elegance and cleanliness of the shapes; the dial is protected by convex sapphire glass. The push buttons in the upper part of the case activate the start, stop and zeroing functions of the chronograph. When the two side pins of the brancard are moved, the case slopes a little, becoming an innovative and iconic instrument for measuring time.

Gear: The Great Helmet Designs of McLaren’s World Champion Drivers in 1:2 Scale

Ayrton Senna World Champion

Although these days they tend to be redesigned, tweeted and Facebooked seemingly multiple times between each practice session, a driver’s helmet is one of their most significant brands, and the helmet designs of the golden age of motorsport still stand today as icons of the sport’s greats.

McLaren is well on board with this idea, and has released an excellent range of 1:2 scale helmets which feature the iconic designs of their legendary World Champion drivers as part of their 50 years of Bruce McLaren celebrations.

James Hunt World Champion

Headlined, of course, by the unmistakable colours of the Brazilian flag, and Ayrton Senna’s helmet.

Also featured are some of my personal favourites; Niki Lauda’s ’84 design and James Hunt’s awesome black ’76 helmet, along with Mika Hakkinen’s ’98 design, Alain Prost’s ’85 design,Emerson Fittipaldi’s ’74 design and Lewis Hamilton’s ’08 helmet.

Niki Lauda World Champion

At 1:2 scale you’ll need a very small head to be able to try them on, and I doubt they’ll do much good as protection for your historic motor racing, but with a durable fibreglass construction and hard-wearing polyurethane paints they’ll work just fine in the man cave, on the office desk, or as a magnificent piece of memorabilia for the historic motorsport connoisseur.

Check ‘em out over at the official McLaren Official F1 Store here.

romance of racing

A different Target: Pledge your support to turn Dario Franchitti’s book into reality.

Dario Franchitti’s new book, Romance of Racing, reveals how much of a fan of racing history he is. The three-time 500 winner and four-time Indycar champion traces his heroes, legends and friends who he respects for what they’ve achieved in the sport. And we need your support to make it happen.

The book, Franchitti’s first, is a collection of essays and stories by him, combined with some of the great images from motorsport archives. The publication is edited, and published, by Motorsport Retro’s Andy Hallbery, and it quickly became a labour of love for the Scottish racer.

With the concept locked in and agreed with Dario, the next step is to publish the book. That’s where Motorsport Retro fans can help. Go to the Romance of Racing Kickstarter page to pledge your support and take advantage of our range of offers.

“Andy is a good friend of mine, and has been for a long time,” says Franchitti. “He’s been on at me for ages to do a book, but I’m not ready to do an autobiography. This time he came to me and said, ‘I’ve got an idea, how about we do a history of racing and the people through your eyes.’ I already liked the idea, but then he sent me a message with a handful of amazing pictures. All it said was ‘These would look good in your book!’ I was already liking the idea, but that swung it, and off we went.”

Hallbery takes up the story. “I started trawling the archives of the great photographers, such as Bernard and Paul-Henri Cahier and the late Michael C Brown, who was another Retro contributor, Big agencies like Getty, LAT Photographic and Sutton Images as well as some less well known, but no less talented shooters,” says Hallbery, “and I quickly knew that the problem we would have would be to get them all in.

“In the end I got it down to about 100,” he continues, ‘and chose the obvious ones to send to Dario to trigger his personal memories. I felt Jim Clark was the obvious best place to start. Dario turned it around as if we were having a chat over dinner or something. His words were perfect, and from the heart. I knew then we had something good on our hands.”

indy 500 winner dario

“Andy knows what makes me tick, and sending me Clark first was nothing short of emotional blackmail!” Franchitti laughs, “but it was a good place to start. For me the difficulty is squeezing all the memories and opinions in. It’s a bit like Twitter for grown ups: ‘ Please write 200 words or less.’ Juan Pablo Montoya became Juan Montoya just to save the word count!”

Franchitti really knows his stuff, and as well as meeting many of the drivers in the book, has been lucky enough to drive various cars from yesteryear, including the highlight, Jim Clark’s Indy 500 Lotus. “That was a dream, and I only gave it half throttle, but it was enough, to smell and hear it. It was amazing.”

Another driver that Franchitti found easy to write about was Juan Manuel Fangio. “You can argue forever who is the greatest,” he says. But in my Mercedes days I saw the W196 in action, and the thought of racing one earned my utmost respect. One of the Mercedes guys told me about Fangio doing a demo in the late 1970s in what turned into a race against Jack Brabham. The guy was almost 70, the car priceless, and he was really hustling it. That was no quiet demo! I’ve since found the clip on Youtube from Sandown Park, and it is truly remarkable.”

Having seen the life of the journalist from the other side, Franchitti has no plans on calling an end to his racing. “No chance,” he says. “Doing the book was great fun, but I have more to do on track yet. But I’m sure readers of Motorsport Retro, who seem to enjoy good photography, will enjoy my take on some of the heroes of the sport, from yesterday to today.”

Now we need your support to make the project a reality. Make your pledge here

The McLaren M7C is known inside McLaren as the “Thursday car”, because on May 15, 1969, the team showed up for practice at Monaco sporting a front wing dubbed the “Guillotine” and was immediately banned on safety grounds.  The Ford Cosworth DFV powered, ‘papaya orange’ racer was never seen in this configuration again.

Lancia Stratos

“It’s a symphony of vaguely disastrous noises, which I really love.”

A few years ago on a Sunday evening after spending the weekend at the Phillip Island Classic, as everyone from the event was busy packing up and heading home, we were walking down the main street looking for a bite to eat when we saw a wonderful sight. A Lancia Stratos Group 5, dressed in full livery, parked under a tree on the side of the road.

It was such a beautiful contrast, this manic machine which we’d watched receiving the beans all weekend on the track, resting by the side of the road in this serene little town.

This video from Petrolicious elaborates on what makes the Stratos so cool, is beautifully shot and is an excellent watch. Enjoy!

continental circus

Being the daredevil passenger, leaning out of a motorcycle sidecar outfit at 160km/h, was not how dress-cutter Jean Kilpatrick saw her future when she left Melbourne with her racer boyfriend Ray Foster late in 1958.

Likewise, she never expected to venture behind the Iron Curtain during the darkest days of the Cold War or have to live on packet soup when funds were tight. But Jean’s willingness to “try anything” made her Australia’s first woman competitor in motorcycle Grand Prix racing.

She became part of the free-wheeling professional motorcycle racing scene known colloquially as the Continental Circus. This loose collection of riders, partners and helpers roamed Europe for five months each year, living out of vans and racing in different town every week.

One week these Australian adventurers might be treated to free hotel accommodation in Chemnitz, East Germany, the next camped in a paddock near Stuttgart and the week after that crossing a dangerous mountain pass between Switzerland and Italy.

waiting on start line

“Ray went to England in 1958 to passenger for Lindsay Urquhart and I went too,” she said. “We couldn’t really afford to go to England, but when you’re young you do things anyway, if you want it badly enough.

“At the end of 1959, Lindsay came home and Ray decided he’d get a sidecar; it was cheaper and more convenient for me to be the passenger,” Jean said. “There was no need to pay, transport and feed a third person. He bought a Manx Norton, stuck a chair on it and we set off on the Continent.”

2000 Toyota IndycarRarely does owning a piece of racing history come at such a low price, especially for a complete vehicle in great condition. You are looking at the number 97 Pioneer/MCI WorldCom Toyota (presented as the No. 25 MCI WorldCom Toyota). This car was the first Toyota to win a major Indy Car race.

9306_31877ec3d3_low_res

Driven by Brazilian racing sensation Cristiano Da Matta, the Pioneer Electronics/MCI WorldCom Toyota earned PPI its first win at Chicago Motor Speedway on July 30, 2000. Da Matta led 51 of 225 laps to reel in a nearly two-second margin of victory over Indy car legend Michael Andretti. Earlier that season, da Matta had also made PPI’s–and Toyota’s–podium debut with a third-place finish in Cleveland, Ohio.

daMatta

Actual car in race winning livery

Da Matta, an Indy Lights series champion prior to joining PPI, was in his second and final year with the PPI team. After PPI’s Indy car operation ended at the close of the 2000 racing season, da Matta went on to win the 2002 CART championship and compete for Toyota in Formula One.

9303_b66280dc06_low_res

When asked about what this first Indy car win meant to him, da Matta said, “This win is for Cal [Wells] and for Jeff Krosnoff.” Krosnoff drove for PPI in 1996, the team’s first full season of Indy car competition. His life was tragically cut short when he was killed in a racing accident in Toronto that same year. Therefore, that’s why you see this car painted in PPG paint using the MCI WorldCom paint scheme as a tribute to Jeff Krosnoff.

Some facts about the car:

  • 2000 Reynard chassis made in England
  • Carbon fiber/honeycomb body construction
  • Weighs 1,550 lbs
  • 40/60 weight distribution
  • Toyota 1.65 liter aluminum alloy V8
  • Xtrac six-speed sequential shift
  • Brembo ventilated steel discs with eight piston calipers

The Magic Motorsport Art of Michael Mate

Porsche Moment

The magic motorsport art of Michael Mate captures the golden age of motorsport with a palpable sense of place, space, light and time.

What makes Michael’s work really stand out to me is context. We’ve seen some truly awesome automotive art recently, but much of it has taken an abstract approach, choosing to focus on feel, design, colour and energy. Michael’s work still captures the energy, colour and bombast of classic motorsport, but with a much more grounded sense of place.

956 Le Mans

“While I have done many different types of Automotive Art over the years, I have always preferred a painting to depict a specific time and place. That means the car and its livery, the background of the circuit and the time of day or night and even the weather. The research that I do is part of the process and something which I enjoy.”

He also has a wonderful way of capturing light, and in particular the Golden Hour; that fleeting period at the beginning and end of each day, where the sun sits low in the sky and produces a wonderfully diffused golden light.

Moss 250 SWB

“Even though it’s more time consuming, I like the subtle blending of colors that is possible with oil paints.”

Featuring icons of classic motorsport, his works are primarily oil paint on canvas, and are available as litho prints, limited giclee prints and extremely limited originals.

Check out his site here for much more, and to buy prints or originals.

Thanks to Michael Mate for the images.

More than 53.000 spectators found their way to the Nürburgring where the Automobilclub von Deutschland (AvD) organised the 41st edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix. Over the weekend more than 500 historic race cars from the past nine decades could be seen in action such as Formula 1 cars, historic Grand Prix cars, Formula Junior single seaters, touring cars and GT´s. Two special highlights marked the event, the 90th anniversary of the Le Mans 24 Hours as well as the Stefal Bellof Tribute. Stefan Bellof was one of Germay´s greatest racing drivers from the eighties probably best known for his record lap driving a Rothmans Porsche 956 on the legendary Nordschleife in a stunning time 6 mins 11.13 seconds. Bellof won the World Sportscar Championship in 1984. In 1984 and 1985 he competed with the Tyrrell F1 team. Stefan Bellof was tragically killed in an accident during the 1985 1000 km of Spa. From Australia, three drivers made the long trip to Germany including Don Thallon (1963 MRC Formula Junior), Scotty Taylor (1958 Cooper T58), John Davies (1958 Cooper T45) and John Rowe (1958 Cooper T45)

The AvD managed to get a large amount of race car on the track that participated in races between the fourties end eighties, from a historic grand prix car, a sports car, touring car or GT to a Formula 1 car. Besides an action packed racing programme divived over Friday, Saturday and Sunday spectators could enjoy demonstrations from BMW and Opel.

Formula Junior

One of the largest field of racing cars over the weekend was produced by the FIA Lurani Trophy for Formula Junior Cars. The Lurani Trophy is for original Formula Junior cars built between 1958 and 1960 (Period E) and between 1961 and 1963 (Period F). Cars that want to participate in the Lurani Trophy must have been constructed in period to the specification of FIA Formula Junior. Divided into 9 different categories 38 historic single seaters equipped with tiny 1000-1100 cc engines or less found their way to the track. In the first race spectators could see a close battle between Britons David Methley (Brabham BT6) and Michael Hibberd (Lotus 27). In the end it was David Methley claiming victory just 0,7 seconds in front of his countryman Michael Hibberd. During the second race on Sunday David Methley was again in the lead but proved to be to quick for Michael Hibberd. Metlhey crossed the finish line nearly ten seconds earlier than his fellow countryman.

Ligier JS21_F1_Timo Scheib

Formula 1 cars up to 1983 in period livery are gathered into the FIA Masters Historic F1 Championship. Fans of classic F1 cars could eat their hearts out with a full grid of no less than 24 single seaters from the golden era of Formula 1. Legendary names as Lotus, Brabham, Surtees, Tyrrell and McLaren appeared on the entry list treating the vast crowd with two spectacular sixteen laps races. Young Michael Lyons from the UK was in a class of it´s own in his RAM Williams FW07 teaching his opponents how a quick lap around the Nürburgring should be driven. He claimed two victories finishing no less than fourteen seconds quicker on Saturday during the first race. On Sunday however it was Spaniard Joaquin Folch in a former Nelson Piquet Brabham BT49C that managed to finish within three seconds of the young Briton. Michael Lyons is an experienced race driver as he participates nowadays in the International GT Open championship.

Porsche 935

The Revival of the Deutsche Rennsportmeisterschaft 1972-1981 is one of the races that pleases the crowds year after year. Especially the final years of the former championship saw true beasts participate with Group 5 cars such as the Porsche 935, BMW M1 Turbo etc. The 41st edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix saw no less than 33 legendary GT´s and touring cars. The DRM or German Racing Championship was a touring and sportscar racing championship, regards as the predecessor of the current DTM championship. Originally the championship started in 1972 open to Group 2 touring cars and Group 4 GTs. From 1977 the legendary Group 5 cars were allowed. As 1985 proved to be the final year the championship was renamed as Deutsche Sportwagen Meisterschaft. During the first on Saturday it was a true Porsche 935 battle between the Kremer Porsche 935 K3 of Wolfgang Kaufmann and the Scuderia M66 Porsche 935 K3 of Ralf Heisig. Kaufmann claimed a demanding victory over Heisig. On Sunday however that battle was once again fought between two 935 K3´s. Wolfgang Kaufmann managed to claim his second victory of the weekend but Daniel Schrey finished within 1.1 seconds on a second place in his Kremer Porsche 935 K3.

Lotus 11

Two-seat race cars and GTs, built before 1960 and 1961 entertained the crowd on two occasions. On Saturday, theses series closed the programma with an 60 minute evening race. On Sunday a thirty minute race was scheduled including a classic Le Mans start. No less than 46 iconic cars filled the grid including Jaguar C-Type, Ferrari 250GT, Aston Martin DB4, different Lola´s just to name a few. On Saturday it was German Maximilian Werner claiming victory in a Ferrari 250GT SWB, in front of Alex Duncombe, a professional GT race driver from the UK. On Sunday however it was Alex Buncombe crossing the finish line first in a Jaguar C-type in front of his fellow countrymen Philip Walker and Miles Griffiths in a Lotus Eleven Le Mans.

IMG_7098

Historic Grand Prix Cars, gathered into the British HGPCA, managed to get 31 cars to the Eifel track featuring some stunning beauties like the Scarab Offenhauser, Lotus 16, Ferrari Dino, Maserati 250 etc. The Historic Grand Prix Cars Association was formed in 1979 by a group of leading historic racing enthusiasts with cars from the 1920s to the 1960s. Philip Walker from the UK claimed victory in the first race on Saturday in his Lotus 16 368, in front of his fellow countryman Julian Bronson in a Scarab Offenhauser. The only Ferrari Dino entered for this race was driven by Briton Tony Smith claiming a third place in the first race of the weekend. During the second race on Sunday a fierce battle was fought between Philip Walker and Julian Bronson. Walker crossed the finish line first, just 0.9 seconds ahead of Bronson.

IMG_5590

For the fans of Le Mans-style sports cars up to 1974 the FIA Masters Historic Sports Car Championship brought 31 icons to the Nürburgring featuring the Lola T70, McLaren M8C, Chevrons, different Porsches and two wonderful Alfa Romeo T33/2s. During the first race it soon turned out to be an epic battle between the McLaren M8C of Stefano Rosina and the Chevron B19 of Martin O´Connell. Jason Wright couldn’t even follow the speed of these prototypes in his Lola T70 Mk.IIIB. After 17 laps it Stefano Rosina who beat Martin O´Connell with only 0.8452 seconds. On Sunday Rosina was again the man to beat but nobody had an answer to his performance. Rosina claimed his second consecutive victory of the weekend over the Lola T70 Mk.IIIB of Jason Wright.

IMG_7327

Classic GTs cars always attrack large crowds and the 41st edition of the Oldtimer Grand Prix wasn´t an exception. Mouth watering Jaguar E-Types, Cobra´s, Lotus Elan´s and many more gave the crowd a back in time experience with a stunning 48 cars field. Just a single race on Saturday was scheduled seeing Nissan professional race driver Alex Buncombe from the UK taking victory in Jaguar E-Type. Scotsmen Sean and Michael McInerney finished second in a TVR Griffith as Frenchma Yvan Mahe managed to take third spot in his AC Cobra.

IMG_7333

The true oldies over the weekend came from the Pre 1940 Pre war and Vintage Sports Car Trophy. Imagine that these cars go back in time over 80 years but still they were going strong. One of the highlights was a rare Bugatti 35C driven by Martin Halusa. It was the very first time since 85 years that this type could be seen in Europe. John Ruston and Gareth Burnet drove a lonely race in their Alta Sports finishing no less than 1 minute and 35 seconds ahead of second placed Alfredo von Ketteler from Germany in a Delahaye 135S. On Sunday however it was German Josef Otto Rettenmaier in his Maserati 8C 3000 claiming victory. Alfredo von Ketteler crossed the finish line second in his Delahaye 135S as Sue Darbyshire from the UK scored a third place in her Morgan Super Aero.

IMG_5471

Another highlight over the weekend was the BMW race first to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary BMW 3.0 CSL. The unique race was open to all BMW´s developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH between 1970 and 1990. Screaming BMW M1 Group 4s, Nelson Piquet´s BMW M1 Procar as well as the ´Wirtshaus BMW M1´ in those days driven by Christian Danner, Peter Oberndorfer and Prince Leopold von Bayern claimed the Eifel race track. Another highlight was the BMW 320 Group 5 from the BMW Junior Team driven by former F1 driver Marc Surer, as well the presence of Venezolan legend Johnny Cecotto. As expected the first race was dominated by the BMW M1, but Johnny Cecotto managed to put his BMW M3 E30 between the winning M1 of Christian Traber and Hans Wagner´s mighty BMW M1 Turbo. On Sunday Hans Wagner fought a nail biting battle with Michael Kammermann in his BMW M1 Procar but after 14 laps it was Wagner crossing the finish line first just one tenth of a second ahead of Kammermann´s M1 Procar.

IMG_7281

The AvD Tourenwagen Trophäe (Touring car Trophy) saw a nice field of historic touring cars and GTs, from the tiny Austin Mini Cooper to the big Ford Mustang. Porsche 917

“A lot of companies race because it’s good for the brand. Porsche races because it’s the air they breathe.” – Dan Neil

This video, put together to promote Porsche By Design: Seducing Speed, an exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art, goes to a who’s-who of Porsche racing royalty to discover what makes Porsches go faster, further.

“You’d talk to the drivers. Derek bell who drove the 917. They’d say I can’t believe we got into those things. They were incredibly dangerous. Your feet were ahead of the front wheels. You were sitting in front of a 12-cylinder engine.” – Robert Cumberford

It centers around the 917, even briefly featuring the rare 16-cylinder development, is packed with historic racing footage of Porsches in action and features some really interesting insights into Porsche’s racing philosophy and drive. Great stuff!

Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed is on at the North Carolina Museum of Art from the October 12, 2013 to January 20, 2014.
