1973 Porsche 911 RS Hurley HaywoodEndurance racing legend Hurley Haywood is reunited with his 1973 911 RS, 40 years after driving it to his first 12 hours of Sebring victory.

Narrated by Haywood himself, this clip shows the racing hero getting back into the groove behind the wheel of the car which earned him his first 12 hour Sebring title. He lovingly describes his surprise at the way that the car still handles, and talks of what it was (and is) like to drive at the iconic Florida racetrack. A great tale of the bond between race car and race driver.

1981 Lotus 87

Image: Hall & Hall

We have a little Formula 1 fever going on here at Motorsport Retro, as we celebrate the red lights going out on the first Formula 1 race for 2014. This magnificent 1981 Lotus 87, driven by Nigel Mansel in 1981, is the perfect cure for what ails us and is up for sale at Hall & Hall.

The Lotus 87 was Lotus’ entry for the second half of the 1981 Formula 1 season, and it was spectacular…ly unreliable for Mansell, who only finished three races from ten in the back half of the season, with five retirements technical in nature.

1981 Lotus 87

Mansell finished the season with a strong result, however, driving this very car to fourth in the 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix.

Finished in one of the greatest liveries of motorsport – the black and gold John Player Special livery, well-maintained and sold complete with a full set of spares, it’s a great contender in  historic motorsport and is very competitive in Historic Formula 1 and the Formula 1 Masters series.

1981 Lotus 87

The Lotus 87 may have been cantankerous in its prime, but this car looks like a brilliant drive today and we’re more that a little jealous of its future owner. It’s up for sale at Hall and Hall, and you can head to their website here for the full details.

John Ketchell Motorsport Art

Image: John Ketchell

John Ketchell is mad about motors, motorsport, and speed in general. And he possesses a gift for expressing what I think we all feel about cars and racing and sharing it with the world through the medium of paint.

His work combines a clear talent for the technical aspects of painting, such as perspective, form and composition, with an eye for capturing colour, action and speed.

John Ketchell Motorsport Art

It’s abstract, but not unidentifiable; just risque enough to make it challenging and exciting, and to elicit a response.

And it’s brilliant. It captures the thrill of racing; the machinery; the knife-edge dance of a close pass; the speed; the abuse of physics; the atmosphere, excitement and energy, and it does it with the same sense of spectacle and joy which the best motorsport events seem to produce.

John Ketchell Motorsport Art

We love it, and think you will too. Check it out above and below, and make sure to head to John’s website here for more and to commission works of your own. Originals can be ordered here, and limited edition prints can be found here.

Thanks to John Ketchell and Historic Car Art

One of Graham Hill’s Greatest to be Auctioned

Graham Hill Lotus

“By every standard, Colin Chapman’s Lotus 49 concept is an absolute landmark in Formula 1 design. It simply raised the bar for every rival manufacturer, and its Cosworth-Ford V8 engine went on to win a record 155 World Championship Grands Prix.” - James Knight

The car responsible for launching the career of the mighty Cosworth-Ford DFV V8, steered in its prime by the likes of Jim Clark, Graham Hill, Jochen Rindt and Emerson Fittipaldi, Lotus’ 49 is certainly one of the greatest and most enduring Formula 1 cars of the golden age of motorsport.

And this Lotus 49B, heading to auction on the 27th of June at Bonhams’ Festival of Speed Auction, is particularly special.

Ex-Graham Hill Gold Leaf F1 Lotus 49B

Chassis 49-R8 was from Gold Leaf Team Lotus’ quiver, and made it into John Dawson-Damer’s impressive collection after its career of period motorsport. It has never been auctioned before.

It was built in October of ’68, and is one of a very small number of Lotus 49s remaining.

In 1968 Graham Hill had just won his second Formula 1 World Championship in Type 49 and 49B Lotuses and was off to take part in the Tasman Championship. Chassis 49-R8 was his drive for the ’69 Tasman Championship, in which he took two seconds, a fourth and a sixth. The car was then sent back to Europe, where it was driven by Richard Attwood.

Ex-Graham Hill Gold Leaf F1 Lotus 49B

From there it made its way back into Graham Hill’s hands for the ’69 British Grand Prix, before being sold to Joakim Bonnier. Changing hands again in 1970 it went to Dave Charlton, who drove it on the way to two of his six consecutive South African Formula 1 Championship titles.

Its period racing career ended at the close of ’72, when John Dawson-Damer took it into his collection and restored it to race condition.

This Lotus 49B is an original example of one of the golden age of Formula 1′s greatest machines, with a hugely impressive history, and we’re interested to see how it goes at auction, and more importantly hope to see it active in the world of historic motorsport again soon.

Once in a lifetime – Jordan F1 collection up for sale

Jordan Grand Prix CollectionIt’s not every day you’re faced with the opportunity to purchase ex-Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill F1 machines straight from Jordan.

Two of the most significant Jordan cars ever raced are up for sale, complete with the helmets, trophies and race suits that went with them – plus more. When you consider that Jordan remain the most successful independent team in the history of the sport, and that these assets are being offered directly by Eddie Jordan himself to the public for the first time, it’s easy to comprehend just how special this opportunity really is.

Schumacher_1991_BelgiumImage: Cahier Archive

The first of the two cars being offered as part of the collection is the original Jordan Grand Prix car, 191 chassis #01 – the first they ever built. Aside from being impossibly beautiful, the 191 is most significant for being driven by Michael Schumacher upon his F1 debut at Spa in 1991. The car is being offered with Schumacher’s original helmet, which he signed and gave to Eddie Jordan personally as a mark of gratitude for granting him his first GP racing opportunity.

Hill_1998_BelgiumImage: Cahier Archive

The second of course, is the very first Grand Prix-winning Jordan, chassis 198 #03. Driven to victory by Damon Hill ahead of team-mate Ralf Schumacher in the 1998 Belgian Grand Prix, it comes complete with the Constructor’s World Championship trophy won on that historic day, as well as Damon’s race suit and helmet.

This very private and personal collection has never previously been offered for sale and also contains a further fourteen significant Driver’s and Constructor’s World Championship trophies, eight Jordan team drivers’ helmets and a selection of other memorabilia. All proceeds are set to go to charity; CLIC Sargent for child cancer, and The Amber Foundation for homeless youth.

Each individual item in the collection is complete with a certificate of authenticity and provenance, signed personally by Eddie Jordan. Everything will formally be presented to the new owner by Eddie himself at Silverstone where it all began for Jordan Grand Prix, and represents a once in a lifetime opportunity to own and become a unique part of F1 history.

For further information see Cars International.

‘Run That Track’ celebrates fifth season

lr_L0U1827Fun and informal, Run that Track has arrived at the Australian Grand Prix – and they want you involved!

Run that Track is a charity event run in partnership with UBS, raising money for a good cause and affording those involved in races such as the 2014 Australian Grand Prix an opportunity to let their hair down and have a little fun.

The concept is very simple – if you’re a member of the F1 community (i.e you carry a Bernie pass around the world), and you run the track during an F1 event, you can submit your lap time to the runthattrack.info website; and for each submission you make, UBS will make a charitable donation on your behalf.

Japanese Grand PrixThis weekend the event is entering it’s 5th season, having raised a total of $862,100 for the Make a Wish Foundation so far – with an eye to take that figure beyond the six-figure mark before the year is out. It’s taking place tonight at Albert Park, 9.45pm!lr_79P7906The team behind the event explain that it all started out as “a bit of a prank”, and that the idea was cooked up over a few drinks sometime during the 2009 F1 season. Several more bars later, the idea had grown into a plan – that being to take the simply peaceful and individual activity of running around the F1 tracks to a ridiculously crazy and completely over the top F1 level where competition and performance could be scrutinised and analysed (and strange conclusions drawn) by people who really should be doing other things.

We love cutaway images here at Motorsport Retro; there’s just something captivating about these artists impressions of what the greatest racing machines of each era look like beneath the skin. The detail is mind blowing from both artistic and engineering perspectives – with some of the machines you can’t help but wonder how on earth they manage to squeeze all of ‘that’ inside such a small, sleek racing car.

Memories of Ari Vatenen (1980)

RAL_CIR_25Read the captivating tale of Ari Vatenen’s return to Canberra, Australia some 35 years ago.

RAL_CIT_4701980 and crowds gathered in the southern suburbs of Fadden and Macarthur in Canberra to watch the first division of the Castrol rally on bitumen.  Australian rally fans had been warmed up by International drivers over proceeding years with Waldegaard, Cowan, Shinozuka, Clark and others in events such as the Southern Cross Rally, but we had not seen Ari Vatanen, the man with the reputation of the worlds most spectacular driver.I was only 21 at the time, a regular competitor in an Escort. My profession was photography and the lure of the worlds best too good to ignore.

A few mates gathered and we were off to Canberra to see the action. We arrived with thousands of others at the intersection of Appel Cl and Bugden Av Fadden, new streets in a new suburb, ready-made for new houses and rally action!

Car 0 came and went with the anticipation building. Then in the hot heavy air, we could hear a BDA Escort accompanied by tyre squeal. Over the crest Vatanen with co driver Dave Richards arrived in 5th gear on the rev limiter, a perfect Scandinavian flick to the left, then right then left as he slid on the lock stops to the turn left at T junction, then an immediate turn right down the hill, never straight, an unbelievable display of driving not seen by anyone before.VATENENCASTROLThe crowd went mad. The police on duty were gobsmacked; they had never seen anything like it and demanded everyone stand a further 50 metres back!

Greg Carr and Colin Bond in similar RS 1800’s repeated the mastery of the slide, not quite to Ari’s flamboyance, but never the less no less impressive, Bond lead by a small margin later.

And there you have it, rally imagery burned into memories never to be erased, with some of the feeling and action on the day captured by the ABC documentary “40 split seconds”, now downloaded thousands of times from the Internet.

In the preceding 34 years, “40 Split Seconds” has been watched by countless car club members often on 16mm at hundreds of car club meetings, the only one of its type added to the National Film and Sound Archives in Canberra._D8N1728_DxOFast forward yourselves to this week. Ari Vatanen accompanied by Rita, his wife were invited to hand out awards at Australia’s Rallying “Hall of Fame” dinner in Canberra, a black tie dazzling night recognising the ‘who’s who“ of rallying in Australia.

The dinner coincided with the first round of the domestic Championship, the ECB Bullbars Australian Rally Championship.

Ari and Rita’s trip was sponsored by Dave Thompson with assistance from Jeff David, a classic Porsche competitor.

Dave has a collection of over 30 race and rally cars including a 6R4 Metro and offered his Audi S1 Quattro replica for Ari to drive, 10 lucky people paying to go for a ride with the rally legend.

The Quattro is an ex NZ car with Subaru running gear but with a genuine body and engine. It’s the business!

Regularly driven by Thompson and car preparer Stewart Reid, the car was used for demos at Rally Australia last year, thrilling many.2014_RAL_VAT_35Back to the Dinner: Ari spoke about his 1980 Castrol rally, noting he had no idea who Greg Carr was; commenting, “wow he was fast” it was a landmark rally for the young Vatanen as it was one of his first events outside Europe. He lost the rally in the closing stages to Carr by 40 seconds after a roll close to the finish.

He spoke about the Peugeot at Pikes Peak, his accident in Argentina and he enthralled the 400 dinner guests with his humility and his views on life in general. He donated a unique book of images he and his photographer friend had taken over 25 years and it was raffled for a significant sum.

In a world where drivers are often aloof and unapproachable, Ari was the opposite, signing countless autographs and memorabilia. His tolerance for this astounded me. No one left the dinner without his autograph! In 40 years of rallying, I have not seen someone loved by so many.

Back to the Forest where Thompson and his crew prepared the S1 Quattro for Ari to drive. Dealing with TV interviews first, it was time for the 10 who had paid to go for a ride.

Ari has not lost any of his speed. He made some adjustments to brakes and boost, announcing to us that the Quattro was “Brutal’!

He powered around the stage used, over the road from where he had come so close to winning the 1980 Castrol, houses now taking over the forest with the bulldozers tearing up our forest 500 metres away. We all felt like Pygmies from the Amazon.

_D8N15492014_Audi_VATDid they not know the God of rallying was so close in a Quattro?

The looks on the faces of the anointed ones as they exited from their ride told the story of why our sport must remember its roots. We were seeing a true legend in action, 34 years later in the same spot where he burned those original images into our heads, reburning new memories.

Up the road the ARC was fighting for coverage and interest. Somehow it was not there. Our G2 class in our National series for the ARC, not capturing the attention of rally fans, nor the media.

I am not sure that in 34 years we will remember who was fastest in the ARC power stage that day, but we will remember the day Ari returned and drove a Group B fire spitting S1 Quattro.

Those images from the past and last week are rallying’s DNA.

WRC take note, it’s your job to preserve it. Please make new memories for our kids, otherwise we will go the way of the Amazon Pygmies.Oldand newRallyImage2Ari and Bjorn, Walter, Hannu and Stig will eventually pass, but their antics won’t.

We need a new bunch of drivers with just half of Vatanen’s humility and talent to keep the mystery of our sport alive.

Video: Five of the best-sounding Formula 1 engines

$

maxresdefaultFive terrific videos showcase the best sounding engines ever heard in F1.

Recent bad press over the sound of the new-for-2014, 1.6-litre turbocharged engines in Formula 1 got us thinking: among the various cylinder and capacity configurations used since the world championship began in 1950, which powerplants have sounded the best? Turn up the volume!

Renault V10

Renault led the turbocharged revolution in F1 in 1977, with its 1.5-litre, V6 turbo EF1 unit. The French motor powered the yellow racers to 15 wins between 1979 and 1983, but would struggle against rival engines from BMW, Porsche and Honda over the next three years. After a sabbatical in 1987-’88, Renault returned with a 3.5-litre V10 and a tie-up with Williams. The multi-cylinder screamer was immediately on the pace, giving Thierry Boutsen and Riccardo Patrese 11 podiums in 1989, including two wins. Over the next five years, the derivatives of the same engine took 36 wins, drivers’ titles in 1992 and ’93 and constructors’ crowns in ’92, ’93 and ’94.

TAG V6 turbo

Built by Porsche at the behest of McLaren, which needed to take the fight to its turbocharged rivals, the TAG-branded TTE-P01 V6 turbo first appeared in the back of Niki Lauda’s MP4/1 in the 1983 Dutch GP at Zandvoort. Its inauspicious debut – Lauda qualified 19th and retired with cooked brakes after 25 of the 72 laps – was soon forgotten when V6 turbo-powered McLarens powered Lauda and Alain Prost to the drivers’ title in the next three seasons and the constructors’ crown in ’84 and ’85.

BRM V16

This eccentric – supercharged, 1.5-litres, 16-cylinders! – British-built monster was recalcitrant in the extreme but made a noise as distinctive as anything that ever troubled a decibel meter. The unit comprised two 750cc V8s with shared cam drives and gears sited in the middle and gave its creative team much trouble. Mounted in the front of British Racing Motors’ P51, it failed to start its maiden world championship race, the 1950 British GP. Brave Brits Reg Parnell and Peter Walker fared better a year later, with fifth and seventh respectively among the Ferrari and Alfa Romeo superteams. The cars appeared again at Monza but didn’t start the race after practice gearbox trouble. Apart from a few non-championship outings, that was it for this original wacky racer.

Ford Cosworth DFV V8

June 4, 1967 was a high-water mark day in F1 engine technology. A three-litre, double four-valve (DFV) V8, designed by Brits Mike Costin and Keith Duckworth and bankrolled by Ford, appeared in the back of the Lotus 49s of Jim Clark and Graham Hill for the Dutch GP at Zandvoort, the third race on that year’s world championship schedule. A debut pole position (Hill) and victory (Clark) for the powerplant set the bar pretty high for Cosworth and the DFV would become the ultimate, off-the-shelf customer F1 engine, taking 154 more wins until 1983 in the back of Lotus, McLaren, Matra, Brabham, March, Tyrrell, Hesketh, Penske, Wolf, Shadow, Ligier and Williams chassis.

Matra V12

From its sonorous first appearance on the streets of Monte Carlo in 1968 to its swansong around the car park of a Las Vegas hotel at the end of 1982, the delicious wail of the French Matra 3-litre V12 enraptured fans. And it still does.
It was Frenchman Jean-Pierre Beltoise who started the craze with the MS11 in that ’68 Monaco GP and, 125 races later, Eddie Cheever and Jacques Laffite who played the final notes at Caesar’s Palace in their JS19s. There were only three victories – all for Laffite – in that 15-year period but it didn’t matter: the French-blue racers and their spell-binding sound were winners to every0ne who heard them.
