Porsche 936 Junior

Images: Bonhams

Putting out an absolutely monstrous five horsepower, surely enough to rival any 935 or 936 we’ve written about, this genuine Porsche 936 Junior is one of the coolest things we’ve seen on our classic motorsport journey.

It’s heading to auction at Bonhams’ upcoming Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale, where you’ll be able to pick it up for an estimated €15,000 – 25,000.

Porsche 936 Junior

In 1981 Jackie Ickx and Derek Bell won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a factory Porsche 936 sportscar prototype, squeezing out the dual Rondeau M379s of Jacky Haran, Jean-Louis Schlesser and Philippe Streiff and Gordon Spice and François Migault.

Their win was the third for a Porsche 936, and the Christian Dior Jules livery of their car lives on as one of racing’s iconic looks.

Three-time European Rally Champion Sobieslaw Zasada was so inspired by the car that he built a 1:2 scale replica of it. Porsche thought that this was a brilliant idea, and so they built their own!

Porsche 936 Junior

And that’s what you see here – one of the fifty to one hundred limited edition miniature ‘Junior’ Porsche 936s built by Porsche.

It features a single-cylinder 206cc motor which pumps out five horsepower through a two-speed plus reverse gearbox. At high speeds you have an adjustable rear spoiler to keep everything settled, and can rely on disc brakes to slow everything down again.

Porsche 936 Junior

It sits on 2-piece alloy wheels and pneumatic tyres which are kept in close contact with the ground by full suspension on all four corners and even hydrolic shock absorbers at the back, features 12-volt electronics including alternator, electric starter, lights, indicators and horn. It even has a leather seat.

All in all, I think it’s probably more advanced than my daily drive!

Un-restored, it’s original and in excellent condition. It includes a Porsche instruction book and an alternative electric motor.

It’s expected to fetch somewhere between €15,000 – 25,000 when it goes under the hammer at Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale on the 5th of February. Head to Bonhams’ website here for more information.

1978 Ferrari 308 GTB Group B

Images thanks to RM Auctions, by James Mann

This tough Ferrari 308 GTB Group B has period racing history, is recently-refreshed and looks great! It’s set to go under the hammer at RM Auctions’ February 2015 Paris Sale.

Going in to the 1984 rally season, eight-time Spanish national rally champion and European Rally Champion Antonio Zanini liked the look of the Ferrari 308. So he went to Fernando Serena in Barcelona and secured a Ferrari 308 GTB to convert into a Group B rally car.

1978 Ferrari 308 GTB Group B

With a specification decided the car went to the Serena workshops where it would receive Michelotto-homologated parts like lightened wishbones, AP Lockheed braking system, stronger anti-roll bars, quick-ratio steering, adjustable dampers, competition clutch and close ratio gearbox. However it was still there when the season opener in Costa Blanca rolled around, which was a problem.

To get himself on the track, Zanini rented another Group B 308 from Italian team Pro Motor Sport and proceeded to dominate the championship and claim the 1984 title long before the season’s conclusion.

It was not until Rally Osona during the back end of the season that this car, the Serena-built 308 finally made its debut. It was immediately successful, with Zanini and Josep Autet finishing a mighty four minutes ahead of their closest competitor.

1978 Ferrari 308 GTB Group B

It appeared again in Rally de Gerona, the final round of the ’84 Spanish Championship, at the hands of Fernando Serena Jr. and co-driver Manuel Casanova. It would become the car’s first DNF when the team was forced to retire during the first stage with a broken brake line.

Zanini would then be contracted to Peugot in 1985, leaving his now race-proven Ferrari without a driver. Its final event would be a round of the European Rally Championship – the 1985 Rally Catalunya with Claudio Caba in the driver’s seat and J. Martin co-driving. After making their way into 5th the pair would make an off-track excursion and struggle to get the car back onto the road, ultimately finishing outside the stage’s allotted time and being forced to retire.

1978 Ferrari 308 GTB Group B

However, this final event would add one more significant element to the car’s history. It had been racing with a new livery sponsored by Cimarron. Scalextric took a shine to the look and used it on one of its slot cars which would go on to become extremely popular in the ’80s.

The car returned to Serena after Rally Catalunya where it was kept by Francesco Serena. He sold it in the late ’80s to a collector who kept the car until he sold it to its current owner in 2009.

In that time it’s done almost no mileage and has recently received a thorough rebuild with full suspension and brake rebuilds and an engine-out service.

A rare and exciting example of Ferrari’s rally history, the car will go up for auction at RM Auctions’ Paris Sale on the 4th of February, 2015, where it’s expected to fetch between €250.000 and €315.000. Head to RM Auctions’ website here for more information.

Shannons Club: XA Falcon GT-HO Phase IV: Was it destined to fail at Bathurst?

The story of the greatest XA Falcon GT-HO of them all, the journey which saw it never race in the event it was designed to win and why it would’ve stumbled if it did.

The Phase IV GT-HO was an evolution of Bathurst-winning stock refined to be more reliable and more durable while also handling and performing better. With the Phase IV, Ford had knocked it out of the park.

To win in endurance racing, however, sometimes the perfect car isn’t enough. Race day for the 1972 Hardie-Ferodo 500 saw tyres and brake pads undo the Phase III GT-HOs which were quickly returned to service to replace their younger siblings.

Heavy showers produced the first wet Bathurst 500, and left the Ford works team with a difficult tyre choice decision to make. The unique collection of conditions seen on that morning would also play havoc with the cars’ brake pads – a factor which came into play later in the race.

So the question is – if the Phase IVs had been able to race that day, would the result have been any different? Enjoy the story in XA Falcon GT-HO Phase IV: Was it destined to fail at Bathurst? at the Shannons Club.

1968 Lotus Indy Turbine CarNearly 50 years ago, a shining beacon from the future rolled onto the grid at Indianapolis. Enjoy the terrific tale of the 1968 Lotus Indy Turbine Car. One of those was Lotus, who entered the 1968 Indianapolis 500 with a trio of turbine powered cars. A terrific story unfolded – and this video captured the lot.

Ex-Ayrton Senna 1981 DAP Kart

Images: Bonhams

Like many motorsport masters, Ayrton Senna rose through the ranks of go-karting on his path to Formula 1. As proof, this kart is the exact same one in which he drove his last kart event.

The coolest part is that you’ll be able to buy it when it goes up for auction at Bonhams’ upcoming Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale.

Ex-Ayrton Senna 1981 DAP Kart

This is an ex-Ayrton Senna 1981 DAP Kart, chassis DAP BH 33, which he drove in the 1981 World Championship event in Parma, Italy. The cart was provided new for the race, and race-prepared to Senna’s specification.

Going in to the event Senna had already begun competition in Formula Ford 1600s, and it would be his last in the series as following it he decided to hang up karting to focus on the Formula Fords.

Ex-Ayrton Senna 1981 DAP Kart

After the race the kart was immediately purchased from de Angelo Parilla of DAP by its current owner. It was purchased sans-engine, but would soon receive an engine identical to the one used by Senna.

Since then it’s only seen a maximum of two hours use and is presented ‘as-new’ by the owner.

It’s no McLaren Mp4/4, but it’s definitely unusual and I think it may just be more fun. The only question is – would you race it?

The kart will go up for sale at Bonhams’ Les Grandes Marques du Monde au Grand Palais sale on the 5th of February, 2015, and Bonhams are expecting it to fetch between €24,000 and €28,000. Head to their official website here for the details.

The car that wanted to win – A closer look at the comeback car that Ferrari needed.

Images & Story Jayson Fong of Form & Function

After being dominated by McLaren in 1984, Ferrari needed a comeback car – But it was not to be. 1985 was a season which saw the birth of the 156/85 coming at a time that Ferrari were in desperate need of an all new car. Ferrari finally had an Italian driver in Michele Alboreto, but he didn’t have a machine that could bring continuous victories home for Ferrari.

DSC_8612

FFF_2317-2

Following a year of complete domination at the hands of McLaren in 1984, it became very evident that the Ferrari 126 template had been caught up by the other teams after 2 years of victory in 1982/83.

FFF_4250

FFF_2049

With their eyes firmly set on getting the prancing horse back to the top of the podium, Ferrari’s 156/85 was a completely new package that was the first single seat machine from  Maranello developed with the assistance of CAD/CAM technology.

DSC_8035

The result was a design that had noticeable differences that looked to give Ferrari an advantage. Some changes included a very forward driving position, a longer wheelbase; radiators positioned parallel to the direction of movement, larger wheel hubs and revised suspension.

FFF_1149

Perhaps more importantly, at the heart of the 156/85 was a completely redesigned turbocharged V6 that produced almost 800hp which was a steep increase of 100+hp compared to the 1984 power plant.

FFF_3054

FFF_6243

Although it became one of the front runners of the 1985 season, there would be no fairy tale season end for the 156/85. After a string of strong podium finishes during the first half of the season, the car would become increasingly fragile and unreliable during the closing stages of the year with multiple engine and turbo problems – most memorably at Brands Hatch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWpZw2h4-jQ

The unreliability of the car during the crucial stage of the year meant that McLaren’s combined effort from Prost and Lauda were given the opportunity to overtake Ferrari’s Alboreto and Johannson on the table. Ferrari would be runners up both in the driver’s and constructor’s championship.

Gibson Motorsport

Spend a weekend getting to know one of Australia’s great touring car racing teams – Gibson Motorsport.

The team recently reformed to support the historic racing scene and preserve the history which they helped to form.

This relaxed video chats with Alan Heaphy, Fred Gibson, Paul Beranger and more to go behind the scenes into the Gibson Motorsport of past and present. It’s cut with some excellent period footage to tell the story of the team which oversaw the rise of Godzilla in Australia.

It’s full of interesting insights into the team, the sport, the cars and the drivers and is well worth a watch.

Gibson Motorsport built up an impressive legacy through their two decades of competition, ultimately leaving the sport in 2003. Fast forward a decade and they’re back to protect and nourish that legacy.

Today the team supports the cars of their golden age, bringing the cars together and engendering a friendship between the people who own and race them today. At Historic Sandown in 2014 they were able to bring together twelve of the fifteen cars available, so they’re clearly doing something right! We’re thrilled to see these cars, drivers and the category in general being supported so generously, and wish them great success.

Hit play, and enjoy!

Kurt Caselli BikeThe story of a fantastic bike, built for an even better reason. Take a look at the Kurt Caselli Foundation KTM 450.

There are a whole of great retro-inspired dirt bike builds out there, however few were planned and executed for reasons as pure as this KTM desert sled.

RSD-Caselli-20_OriginalThe story goes that Red Bull North America wanted to build a bike to promote the release of ‘On Any Sunday, The Next Chapter’. The film was a follow up to the unforgettable 1971 Classic ‘On Any Sunday’, so the bike which was to be used for the aforementioned promotions had to be something special. RSD-Caselli-28_OriginalThe nature of the ’71 classic meant that a flat tracker, hill climber or road racer could have easily have been built to support the release of the sequel. RSD-Caselli-17_OriginalWhat they decided to go with was this desert sled, built in memory of much loved offroad racer Kurt Caselli.
