This gorgeous ’66 427 Cobra has been stomping historic races for the past quarter century with its owner of 35 years, and is now up for sale at Fantasy Junction, ready to head to a new owner and its next few decades of historic racing action.

Pitstop-Porsche_1986_LeMans_03_PHCTake a journey back through a magical era in Sportscar racing.

It’s safe to say that the 24 Hours of Le Mans was dominated by Porsche in the 1980s. The German marque won every race between 1981 and 1987 inclusive, with the 956 and 962C striking particular fear into the hearts of their rivals. There were however, exceptions – Jean Rondeau’s Ford Cosworth took the honors in 1980, as did the legendary Silk-Cut Jaguar XJR12 in 1988, whilst Jochen Mass and co did the deed for Sauber in 1989.

Cahier was there to capture the magic.

“While the memory of many successful racing cars fades with time, that of the 917 has endured, passing not just into Porsche history but motorsport folklore itself. Amazing when you consider it raced for just five short seasons 40 years ago. The word “legend” is overused generally and in racing circles particularly, but if any car can be said to be worthy of it, the 917 surely is.” – Derek Bell

Get to know 17 iconic Porsche 917s in intimate detail in this special and extremely limited edition of Jeff Zwart’s Porsche 917 X 17.

Derek Bell Porsche 917

Porsche 917 X 17 explores 17 of Porsche’s classic race cars in intimate detail, finding each car’s personality and history as it artfully presents distinctive characteristics, details and patina and places them into context with portraits and stories from fifteen Porsche drivers who experienced the thrill and fear of pushing the cars to their utter limits in racing situations.

Porsche 917

Limited to just 150 numbered copies, this deluxe version of the book is signed by all of the drivers who feature in it, including  Tony Adamowicz, Richard Attwood, Derek Bell, Vic Elford, George Follmer, Hurley Haywood, David Hobbs, Willi Kauhsen, Gerard Larrousse, Gijs van Lennep, Rudi Lins, Jackie Oliver, David Piper, Sam Posey and Brian Redman.

It’s printed on a heavy matte art paper and features spot varnish, metallic silver ink and cloth-covered slipcase, making it absolutely lavish in its presentation and an object of beauty worthy of the machines it represents. We’d love to have one to adorn the office meeting room!

1963 LOTUS 23B

Image: Grand Prix Classics

This little racer, up for sale at Grand Prix Classics, is a great example from Lotus’ sportscar racing history and would make an awesome historic racer.

Designed by Colin Chapman for FIA Group 4 racing in the early ’60s, the Lotus 23 was a feisty little sportscar racer which could trade punches with the big boys from Porsche, Aston Martin and Ferrari and come out on top.

1963 LOTUS 23B

This car’s a 23B, which refined the original 23, combining the radiator and oil cooler into one unit and stiffening the frame with additional structural tubes to handle the torque produced by Lotus TwinCam-based 1.6-litre Cosworth Mk.XII and Mk.III power plants.

It looks to be in great condition, and would be a fun and unique ride in historic motorsport. Head to Grand Prix Classics here for more information.

BMW jumpIs it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a BMW 3 series.

Welcome to the 2013 Viru Rally, Estonia. We watched all three of these videos in utter awe of driver Pritt Koik and his fearless co-driver Alari-Uku Heldna, as the pair soar through the air aboard their E36 BMW M3 before crash landing and immediately initiating a slide into the next corner.

The way he catches the landing and then recovers it into the next corner at high speed is nothing short of breathtaking. We must have watched it more than 10 times and we still can’t decide if it was pure skill, or pure luck that things didn’t go completely wrong. Perhaps a mix of both, prepare to be blown away:

And of course, the ever popular (and terrifying) onboard:

“It’s a police car without a siren!” – Peter Brock

Thanks to its big power and low weight, the VH Commodore SS was the perfect production platform for Holden’s early ‘80s Bathurst blitz.

Peter Brock had been fighting with the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport since 1980 to get the big-valve L340-type heads on his HDT Commodores approved for racing, so the release of the V8 VH SS in late ’82 proved his ticket to Bathurst glory – valid for two consecutive wins on The Mountain.

This particular gem of a video was shot in Monaco 1980, and looks to have been a bucket of fun for racers and spectators alike. The music is perfectly fitting, too.
