1971 BMW 2002 Rallye

Image: Coys

We see a lot of historic racecars which are significant, storied and incredibly valuable up for sale, and they’re nice to look at and think about, but sometimes I feel that we may be missing the point. Historic racing is supposed to be fun! And this gorgeous little ’71 BMW 2002 Rallye looks like a whole lot of that!

When BMW Important Men Helmut Werner Bönsch and Alex von Falkenhausen realised that they’d both fitted two-litre engines to their personal 1600-2s, they realised that they were missing a trick and began a project to put a two-litre 1600-2 into manufacture. A year or two later and various configurations of the 2000 and 2002 were born!

1971 BMW 2002 Rallye

The 2002ti in particular was a very successful little machine, with Hans-Joachim Stuck winning the Nurburgring 24 Hours in 1970 and the cars doing particularly well in rallies and hill climbs.

This car was fully rebuilt to racing specifications in Austrlia in 2006 by Quintec House, including a new 197 horsepower dynamometer, Bilstein adjustable suspension front and back, and steering, gearbox, differential, brakes and fuel tank all upgraded to competition homologation.

At just 960 kilograms it’s sure to be a historic racing weapon, and a lot of fun!

It’s heading to auction at Coys’ Athena, Greece auction, where it’s estimated to fetch an affordable €30,000 – €38,000.

For more information head to Coys’ website here.

Classic Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix moments caught on film

Ickx-Regazzoni_1970_Austria_01_BCThe very best moments the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix has ever known.

Opening image: The Cahier Archive

With the 2014 Austrian GP right around the corner, we decided to select our all time favorite Austrian Grand Prix moments.

Enjoy:

1970 – Jacky Ickx and Clay Regazzoni’s claim famous Ferrari one-two

Formula 1 returns to Austria for the first time in more than half a decade, with a brand new track (The Osterreichring)

1972 – Fittipaldi sets up Championship

Emerson Fittipaldi glides his Lotus to victory against the McLarens of Denny Hulme and Peter Revson, carving himself an unbeatable lead in the Championship.

1975 – Vittorio Brambilla’s infamous “Win and Spin”

We’ve laughed about “Spin and Wins” in the past – when a driver spins out only to regain control and win the race, however in 1975 things went down in reverse. Vittorio Brambilla won the 1975 Austrian GP to his own surprise when the event was cut short due to wet weather. His arms flung from the cockpit of his car in celebration immediately, causing him to loose control and career off the track. Thankfully the car managed to limp its way around the track.

1976 – Watson wins for Penske

Whilst driving for Penske in 1976, John Watson swore that if the team won a race he’d shave off the beard which at the time, he was quite famous for. It happened in Austria, and immediately following the race, Watson came good on his promise.

1982 – De Angelis and Rosberg stage epic finish

It was August 1982 and Formula 1 was in desperate need of a ‘win’. Didier Pironi had been maimed whilst racing in Germany during the previous Grand Prix and earlier in the year the much loved Gilles Villeneuve had been killed in Belgium. The mood that had settled across F1 was heavy, however the race that Elio De Angelis and Keke Rosberg would deliver at the 1982 Austrian GP would go a long way to reigniting everyone’s passion for the sport. De Angelis managed to edge out Rosberg on the last corner by just .05 seconds, what a moment!

1984 – Lauda wins at home

The Austrian Grand Prix first ran in 1964, however it wasn’t until 20 years later that local fans would see one of their own countrymen claim victory at the event. How fitting that it was Niki Lauda who won the race for his home crowd for the first time, whilst on his way to the championship in 1984.

1999 – McLaren Team mates collide

By the time the 1999 Austrian Grand Prix rolled around, Mika Hakkinen was looking good. He had a decent lead in the points championship, and his strongest contender Michael Schumacher was out with a broken leg. Things should have gone smoothly, Hakkinen ‘should’ have won, however a botched move by his own team mate David Coulthard saw Hakkinen spin and put him out of contention for victory. He managed to claw his way back to take third, however the damage was done – Eddie Irvine won the race and closed the gap in the title race.

2002 – Lucky Escape for Sato

Takuma Sato saw his life flash before his eyes when Nick Heidfeld flew completely out of control, and into the side of him. Sato escaped without any major injuries. Had this incident happened years earlier, the outcome could have been much worse.

2002 – Ferrari team orders controversy

Ferrari upset fans during the final moments of the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix when they ordered driver Rubens Barrichello to slow down, while leading, so that Michael Schumacher cold pass and collect maximum points. It didn’t go down well with fans, the FIA or Rubens.

Many of you will no doubt recall a video we shared towards the tail end of 2013, in which a madman steered the absolute wheels of his MKII Escort. Well, now he’s back – and thanks to an incar camera we’re all onboard.

In this video, Simon McKinley hustles his little white Escort through closed roads as part of the Wexford Hillclimb. It’s short, but very sweet. This guy is awesome!

Porsche Le MansA definitive look at why Porsche’s return to Le Mans in 2014 was so important.

So the 2014 24 hours of Le Mans has been run, and what an incredible race it was! Unfortunately for Porsche, their highly celebrated return to the event wasn’t quite as successful as they might have hoped, however if nothing else they certainly proved that their team had pace. Could Mark Webber have held the lead and brought home the dream result for Porsche had his gearbox stayed together? We’ll never know, as is the magic of Le Mans. Bring on 2015!

GoPro Jump crash When you’re flying through the air and something goes wrong, the whole situation can unravel very quickly.

We’re a big fan of anything that reminds us of old-school racing and risk taking here at Motorsport Retro, so this World Record Attempt for the longest jump aboard what appears to be some kind of tubular, V8 powered miniature race truck dressed as a Mini, is right up our alley. It reminds us of the days of old, when stuntmen were celebrities, and everyone spoke of the gladiators risking their lives for glory.

Well, pro skier, snowboard champion and rally driver Guerlain Chicherit certainly risked his life with this one. Things didn’t go to plan at all – thankfully he’s OK!

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Transformation Groupe 4

The only 365GTB/4 with period racing history in Asia, this car has a unique history and is immaculately well prepared. It’ll head to auction at Artcurial’s upcoming 2014 Le Mans Classic Sale.

It was originally imported into Singapore, where it remained unregistered until 1979 and was used purely as a competition car in events such as the Kallang Sprint, Dover Kilo and Pasir Gudang.

1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 DaytonaTransformation Groupe 4

When it moved on to its second owner it was handed to Customer Support at Maranello for preparation work, before changing hands again and going to Stanley Long, who competed with the Singapore Motor Sports Association, Johor Motor Club and Classic Car Club of Hong Kong.

After an accident in the early ’90s the car was rebuilt to Group 4 Specifications, and 2001 saw it survive an engine fire, for which it received body repairs in Singapore before going to England in 2003 for a complete mechanical re-build by GTO Engineering.

Having survived an eventful three and a half decades the car entered a quiet period in the mid ’00s, eventually being registered in 2012 and making its way to its current owner.

The car is in great condition with superb Group 4 preparations and FIA documentation that’ll gain it entrance into the world’s most prestigious historic events. Storied and sorted, it looks like a great buy.

It’ll head to auction on July 5th, 2014, at Le Mans Classic 2014 by Artcurial Motorcars, and you can get the full details at Artcurial’s official website here.

Ducati Scrambler The iconic Ducati Scrambler is making a return for 2015.

Legendary motorcycle manufacturer Ducati surprised everyone a few days when it announced to its Bologna factory workers that the hit 1960s and 70s model would be making a comeback in 2015. Not only that, it let them check the bike out up close. Unfortunately for us, no one was allowed to take pictures, and details regarding release are still a little bit flakey – but we’re told it’s going to happen in 2015. If Ducati have done it right, this has the potential to be a very cool thing…

The car’s original owner purchased it directly from the factory in Group 4 specification for regional racing, and kept it for close to a decade before selling it to its second and current owner in 1980.

At this time it was fitted with an 1860cc Mignotet engine, but that was deemed too unreliable and replaced with a 1596cc engine in time for the 1980 Tour de Corse. Despite showing some great speed the team didn’t bring home any serious results, an unfortunate feat which they mirrored in ’82 when they returned to the race, but were forced to retire with a carburettor problem.

Since then the car’s contested hill climbs and regional rallies such as les Geants and le Touquet, but led a fairly quiet career.

Recently the body has been treated to a fresh coat of paint, and it still features its original interior with bucket seats, roll cage, fire extinguisher, spare wheel behind the seats and period ‘Speedpilot’ Halda.

In excellent original condition, this low-mileage two-owner car looks like a lovely little historic racer. It’s going to head to auction at Artcurial’s upcoming Le Mans Classic 2014 by Artcurial Motorcars, which will be held on the 5th of July, 2014, at Circuit de la Sarthe. Head to Artcurial’s official website here for the full details.
