EscortThere’s a reason the spectators rushed to this driver’s aid before his car had finished rolling.

When things go wrong whilst airborne, they really go wrong. Watch as spectators rush to this drivers aid before the car even begun to run out of momentum – this is because it’s immediately obvious that this is going to be a particularly nasty accident. Luckily, both driver and co-driver were fine. The car however, was another story.

hesketh-motorcycle-3-625x416The all new ’24′ winds the clock right back.

It doesn’t have a whole lot in common with the famous 1980s Hesketh motorcycles, however this all new Hesketh 24 is very special. It’s been crafted as a throwback to the mid 1970s, when James Hunt was making waves amongst Formula 1 whilst driving the unforgettable Hesketh machines.

MORE: Check out the ex-James Hunt Hesketh F1 car (photo)

Hunt_1975_Italy_01_BC

In 1975, James Hunt won his first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix whilst racing the Hesketh 308B. He went on to place a personal best of fourth overall in the season, before being picked up by McLaren and becoming World Champion in 1976. The cars he drove for Hesketh in those early years are often remembered for their striking looks.

hesketh-motorcycle-4-625x416

These striking looks are what the new Hesketh 24 borrows, and the result is a great looking bike. Hesketh clearly wanted to do a good job at bringing the number back – it’s the first proper all-new bike the marque has built in more than 30 years.

hesketh-motorcycle-5-625x625The technical side of things sees a 1950cc air-cooled S&S X-wedge engine and a Baker gearbox. It’s the same engine found in three-wheeled Morgans, as well as countless custom American bikes.

hesketh-motorcycle-1-625x625It makes around 125 horsepower, and certainly looks the part too. As you can see in the photograph above, the suspension comes from Ohlins.

hesketh-motorcycle-2-625x416Only 24 of these very cool machines are going to be built, and they’ll retail for £35,000 (around US$60,000). Orders are being taken now, check out the Hesketh Motorcycles website for more details.

Nigel Mansell Dallas 1984July 8th, 1984 – The finish line of the Dallas Grand Prix

Colin Chapman first brought Nigel Mansell into Formula 1 during the 1980 season, four years later he found himself behind the wheel of the potent Renault-powered Lotus 95T. He’d tasted the similar 93 and 94T in 1983, and in 1984 at Dallas he put the 95T on pole – besting team mate Elio de Angelis and the works-Renault driver Derek Warwick.

In the race itself Mansell managed to hold his lead for the entire first half of the race before being overtaken by Kiki Rosberg. Then, three laps before the finish line disaster struck for Mansell – his gearbox suffered a terminal failure. In desperation, he attempted to push the car to the finish line, and ended up being classified in sixth position. He fainted from the effort of doing so.

It’s pretty incredible just how far gone a car can appear to be, yet still retain just enough of its former self to remain capable of being saved. This video shows the sheer amount of work that went into turning this 1968 Ford Escort MK1 from scrap to spectacular!

Mercedes W196 FOSNine clips you simply can’t miss!

We hope you all enjoyed our live stream coverage of the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed! For those who missed out, don’t worry for a moment, as we’ve compiled all of the most interesting parts of the event into this list of nine awesome videos.

From Formula 1 to Nascar, Le Mans to Pikes Peak, the 2014 Goodwood ‘FOS’ really did deliver. It’s easy to understand why so many enthusiasts consider it to be the greatest motorsport festival on the planet – watching the real-deal cars of glory days of the past being blasted at full noise through the narrow halls of Goodwood will never get old. As usual, there was plenty of sideways action; sometimes intentional – sometimes not! Enjoy.

The Hill Climb Shootout

The ultimate ‘run what you brung’. Formula 1 vs NASCAR vs Sportscar… and more!

What’s four decades between friends?

John Surtees’ 1964 Ferrari 158, and Kimi Raikonnen’s 2007 Ferrari F2007. Both champion cars built by Ferrari, and driven by the men who took them to number one.

18 year reunion

1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill back behind the wheel of the awesome Williams FW18. What a sight.

Two of a kind

Helping Mercedes Benz celebrate their 120th birthday, Lord March and Sir Stirling Moss steer two of the best looking cars of the 2014 Festival of Speed – the open and closed-wheel incarnations of the awesome W196.

Something old, something new

This is what people come to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to see! A legendary Formula 1 machine, being driven by a current F1 driver.  Felipe Massa has a turn of the Williams FW18.

The King

What a terrific looking machine the Belvedere GTX was. In this clip, NASCAR living legend Richard Petty steers his original 1967 Plymouth Belvedere. The car was shipped the whole way from North Carolina for the event, and Petty mentions that it’s the first time the car has been used in about 40 years!

And now for something completely different…

Kiwi drifter Mad Mike changes the weather forecast dramatically, blasting tyre smoke throughout the Festival of Speed whilst driving his recently rebuilt four-rotor Mazda RX-7.

Top tier

There are countless exciting forms of racing cars on display at the FOS each year, however nothing ever compares to the sights and sounds of Formula 1.

Central Displays

It might seem to defy both gravity and common sense to mount, hang and hold irreplaceable racecars upside down and on their side in the name of art. The result however, is very impressive. Take a look at some of the Goodwood Festival of Speed Central Displays.

The Classic Motorsport Art of Tom Havlasek

Image: Tom Havalsak

We first encountered Tom Havalsak’s ravishing retro art back in the wild old days of 2013, and we loved the way he captured the bombastic character of the golden age of motorsport. He recently got in touch to share some of his new work with everyone, and it’s even better.

The Classic Motorsport Art of Tom Havlasek

We particularly love his new design-heavy works, which pull a major design colour from a car and employ it as a simple block background with the car set side-on at the bottom of the frame. It’s a striking way to emphasise the lines of a car and the machines have a wonderful pop to them.

The Classic Motorsport Art of Tom Havlasek

Since we last spoke, Tom’s installed six of his works in the famous Le Mans Legends cafe in, surprisingly, Le Mans, and had his Senna JPS painting featured at a gallery in Monaco. We’re thrilled to see his work supported in this way and hope that, like his work, things get better and better!

Tom is available for commission work and you can contact him via email at tomhavlasekart@gmail.com. Check him out on Facebook at his page here.

Ferrari 312PB videoThis is the kind of perfect, crisp audio that an engine like the Ferrari flat-12 deserves.

Sit back and enjoy as the timeless scream of one of the great Ferrari sportscars cuts straight through your computer speakers, bypasses your ears and goes straight to the brain. What an unbelievable noise!

This video by Petrolicious is centered around an ex-works Ferrari 312PB of 1972 fame, with the current owner demonstrating a little bit about what it’s like to own such an incredible sportscar. Our favorite part of this clip occurs when owner and narrator Steven Read explains that whilst racing he actually has to force his focus away from the beautiful noise of the car, so that he can get the car around the track. What a problem to have!

Pikes Peak winnerThis is the kind of driving it takes to win at Pikes Peak in 2014.

Romain Dumas took out the top honors in the Unlimited Class at Pikes Peak this year, squeezing every last drop of speed from his Norma M20 RD to attack the mountain and record a time of 9 minutes, 5.81 seconds in total. This gave him first place overall by around three full seconds! While like many we miss the days of an unsealed surface at Pikes Peak, we’re well aware that it’s far from a walk in the park for drivers today – just look at the speed Dumas is carrying through some of those bends!

It has been reported that Romain wanted to break the 9 minute barrier, however gusty winds and a slippery surface prevented him from doing so.

In this epic novel about the motor-racing heroes of Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, legendary characters battle to win incredible races on switchback roads along the edges of ravines.

We’re sold! Tracks heads back to the wild days where it all started; when immeasurable glory was in reach for those courageous enough to do battle with insurmountable odds and the most dire of consequences.

Tracks: Racing the Sun witnesses grand prix racing in the ’30s and tells a human story about Man’s quest to master the machine and go ever faster, as the world descended once more into the grip of World War.

This early period of motorsport, when men danced on a knife-edge between victory and death, is hugely compelling and Tracks tells its story in a way that’s illuminating and entertaining.
