Pit & Paddock

Images: Auto-Archives, Photography by Peter Darley

Pit & Paddock: Unseen 60s & 70s European Motor Racing Images goes behind the scenes with never-before-seen images which tell the story of motorsport as it was in Europe and the United Kingdom in the ’60s and early ’70s. And you can help get it published.

The project is from Auto-Archives Auotomotive & Motor Sport Library and Research Center, a not-for-profit organization working to preserve and document automotive history and provide resources to study its past, present and future.

Pit & Paddock: Unseen 60s & 70s European Motor Racing Images will feature previously unpublished images from Peter Darley, with a forward written by the one and only Lord March. Dan Gurney and Sir Jackie Stewart are supporting the project, signing a limited number of art prints of photographs taken by Darley of them in the period.

Pit & Paddock

It’s planned to be a 256-page large format (12X12in) hardcover and will feature more than 240 photographs of life behind the scenes at Brands Hatch, Clermont Ferrand, Crystal Palace, Goodwood, Jarama, Monaco, Monza, Oulton Park, Silverstone and Snetterton.

Drivers such as Dan Gurney, Phil Hill, Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt are featured, as are the magnificent machines they made their careers with in the ’60s and ’70s.

Pit & Paddock looks to tell an interesting story, and one which often goes untold as we focus so sharply on on-track action, delving into the world of the people which kept this iconic period of motor racing buzzing.

Pit & Paddock

A not-for-profit organization, Auto-Archives are working to crowdfund the project on Kickstarter. Kickstarter pledge money is needed for the final stage of high-resolution negative scanning and for printing the book itself, for which Auto-Archives has partnered with Coterie Press.

With development well under way, the book is looking stunning. They’re currently about half way to their $24,500 goal with just a few days left – so rush to this link to support them and play a part publishing this tremendous work.

You can support them by pledging to a number of reward tiers. Rewards range from $25 for a 12X10″ art photo print of an image from the book, signed by Peter Darley, to a very reasonable $50 for a copy of the book, through several tiers of limited editions and beyond.

Head to Pit & Paddock: Unseen 60s & 70s European Motor Racing Images on Kickstarter here for more information and to support the project, and find out more about Auto-Archives here.

Niki Lauda Three time World Champion Niki Lauda speaks out, calling for more aggressive, faster Formula One cars which are more difficult to drive, and more exciting to watch.

Niki Lauda knows a thing or two about Formula One, so when he comes out and says that we need to drastically change the way the cars are setup, we’re listening. Lauda wants six-figure horsepower, big tyres and aggressive aero. He compares the modern F1 car to F3, and says that they’re too easy to drive fast.

We’d love to hear that chat with Bernie.

Jaguar XJR 15 A field of 1/2 million pound Jags, Murray Walker commentating and drivers with names like Warwick, Brabham, Needell, Euser and Wolleck. This was the 1991 Monaco Grand Prix Jaguar XJR 15 race.

…and what a spectacle it was! 16 wealthy privateers lending £8m worth of Jaguars to professional drivers so that they could battle it out for glory in the Jaguar Intercontinental Challenge. Adding a little extra flair to the mix was the fact that Jaguar XJR 15 owner and music producer Matt Aitken had decided to pilot his machine himself.

Classic Daytona 24 Hour

Image: HSR

In just about a month the lights will go out on the Classic 24 Hour at Daytona, and six period-correct groups of significant race cars will turn the high-speed banked circuit into their high-octane playground for 24 hours.

Daytona has played host to endurance sportscar racing since 1962, when the Daytona 3 Hour Continental was first run. In 1966 the circuit hit its stride by hosting the first 24 Hours of Daytona, which was won by Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby in a Ford GT40 Mk. II. It was, after all, 1966 and GT40s were hitting their stride in a big way.

The race became a classic and remains that way today. Its spirit, and the cars and people who form it, is celebrated each year with the Classic 24 Hour at Daytona.

This year’s event will be held from November 12 to 16 at Daytona International Speedway. It’s open to all significant sports cars from 1961 to 2010 and features a healthy collection of machinery which raced in period in the 24 Hours of Daytona.

The cars are divided into six period-correct groups and race on a rotating schedule throughout the 24 Hours. It’s a brilliant race with the perfect atmosphere, and ticks all the classic motorsport boxes.

Head to the official website at classic24hour.com for more information, and to organisers Historic Sportscar Racing here. And spend a few minutes getting into the mood with HSR’s latest video below!

Volkswagen’s Karmann Ghia is a beautiful classic motorcar; one which would be perfectly at home on the open road or loving life as a city cruiser with class.

History had bigger plans for them than just those, however, and wild racing Karmann Ghias developed a commanding presence in off-road and sports sedan racing.

Throughout the 1960s and ‘70s, motor sport competitors with an eye for engineering used Type 14 Karmann Ghias as a platform for motorsport development. And they were both quick and competitive!

Find out what they got up to, and meet the wildest Karmann Ghia of them all in VW Karmann-Ghia: Wild Aussie Off-Road Racers and Sports Sedans at the Shannons Club.

Historic Racing at Wakefield Park

Images: Seth Reinhardt

Over the last weekend of September, 2014, the HSRCA and friends gathered at Wakefield Park to celebrate 20 years of historic motorsport on the great drivers’ circuit. And they did it in style – putting on a packed weekend of historic motorsport for an impressive range of historic sports and racing car machinery.

Springtime was on full song throughout the weekend, setting the scene beautifully and enhancing the already relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Historic Racing at Wakefield Park

Race and regularity feature events were held for the pre-1930s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s historic racing and sports cars which make up Groups J, K and L. The people of J, K and L are some of the most relaxed and friendly you’ll find anywhere, and it’s always wonderful to chat with them and to see the older cars out on the track being treated like kids of half their age!

Historic Racing at Wakefield Park

Keeping them company over the weekend, and putting on an excellent event as always, was the full selection of 5th category historic sports and racing cars. There was a terrific variety of cars to enjoy, and each was prepared and driven well.

All groups had a good showing over the weekend, with multiple events each day closely-contested and well driven, from the fiercely-competitive fields in Group N and Group S to the more chilled pace of Regularity.

Historic Racing at Wakefield Park

One of my favourite aspects of historic motorsport, the pits and paddock were a joy to explore as always. You have almost unrestricted access to explore at these events, and can really get involved in the event and up close and personal with the cars and the people who maintain and run them.

The HSRCA have one more event planned for 2014 – the 2014 HSRCA Tasman Trophy which will be held at Sydney Motorsport Park over the 29th and 30th of November. It’s sure to be a big one and attract a unique collection of historic machinery. Head to their official website here for more information.

And in the meantime, enjoy these photos from the event, by Seth Reinhardt, and hit this link for more.

Lotus 18 Formula Junior – Fire up – Video

Lotus 18 Formula JuniorStraight from the pipes of a Historic Formula Junior champ, this is what the original Ford 105E-based Lotus 18 engine sounds like.

It wasn’t driven by Clark, Moss or a Taylor, however this Lotus 18 is still a champion. In the hands of current owner Robert Barrie it’s won the Historic Formula Junior Championship. It’s completely authentic, beautifully restored and it sounds fantastic.

The car originally came from the United States, campaigning on the West Coast and in Canada for a number of years before moving to the UK sometime during the middle of the 1990s. Since then it’s been rebuilt perfectly and has spent years racing with the best.

This quick video showcases the Ford 105E-based Lotus engine revving up at Goodwood. The 8,500+rpm capable motor sounds glorious! Enjoy.

Slot cars – The $300k track – Video

Slot Cars Martin RacewayThey’ve built tracks for Jay Leno and Bobby Rahal, however this is Slot Mods USA’s crowning jewel. Say hello to $300,000 worth of slot car heaven.

You’d be hard pressed to call any of Slot Mod USA’s projects toys; they range from perfect replicas of international racetracks to wild, weird and wonderful custom creations. Each feature is painstakingly recreated in meticulous 1:32 detail, and each track costs hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Pit crews, buildings, trees, stands, railings, houses and retaining walls are all part of high end minature race tracks, however how many slot car setups do you know which feature constant live streaming from mini-cams mounted onboard? These cameras stream to screens mounted around the track, a particularly striking feature when the headlight and roadside lamp-lit night mode is activated.

It’s impressive, however for more than a quarter of a million dollars you’d want a little bit of icing on the cake, which is exactly why a party hosted by Vic Elford and David Hobbs is included in each quote.

Just imagine having to put each one together!

Ferrari 512M – Revolutionary – Video

Ferrari 512MThe Ferrari 512M was a car which changed the racing world forever, despite this one never actually winning a race. This is its story.

The Sunoco Ferrari 512M was a revolution when it rolled onto the grid at Daytona in 1971. It had an all-star cast behind it with owner Roger Penske, drivers Mark Donohue and David Hobbs, and head mechanic John Woodward.

It was beautifully presented and the betting man’s favorite to win every race it started. It even won pole position that day at the 24 Hours of Daytona. However with an incredible run of bad luck to follow, it never actually won a race.

Victory looked likely for Penske in the race, until Vic Elford’s Porsche 917 had a tyre failure, which caused a traffic bunch up and an accident which would see Charles Perry slam his 911s into Donohue and the Ferrari 512M.

The next race for the 512M was the 12 Hours of Sebring, which was robbed from Donohue by a Porsche 917 again when driver Pedro Rodriguez rammed into the Ferrari enough times that it needed to pit for repairs.

Then came an engine failure in France, and a broken steering knuckle at Watkins Glen. It seems nothing ever quite went right for this Ferrari 512M.

MORE: Close, but no cigar – The Ferrari 512s at Daytona 1971 (video)

Still, it was a beautiful car, and the car from one of the first teams to ever operate in an entirely professional and clean-cut manner. Soon, all other teams would follow Penske’s lead.

1956 EJS Climax Special

Images: Artcurial

This breathtaking 1956 EJS Climax Special, soon to be auctioned at Artcurial’s Automobiles sur les Champs 7 sale, is unique, quick, eligible for historic racing and complete with a fascinating period history.

And did we mention how gorgeous it is?

1956 EJS Climax Special

EJS stands for Edwin Joseph Snusher, the automobile engineer who created this curvacious competition classic. From 1954 he spent two years designing and developing the car to compete against Lotus, Cooper, Elva and Tojeiro – and he did it all from scratch.

Its tubular chassis weighs just 30 kilograms with aluminium panels for rigidity. It’s shrouded in a fibreglass Mistral body, giving it those stunning looks.

1956 EJS Climax Special

Powering the car is a Climax engine and in period the power moved to the wheels through a five-speed Aston Martin DB3 gearbox.

The suspension was bespoke and designed to be adjustable. Up front the combination of a semi-elliptical spring with a coil spring under tension beneath it gives the car a constant camber and caster. The rear employed a De Dion axle, but used two parallel tubes instead of the single standard.

1956 EJS Climax Special

For the brakes rear drums were attached to the differential and featured separate circuits front and rear.

Snusher raced the car in 1956, achieving a fourth at Crystal Palace in that August, but then sold the engine and gearbox and put the car into storage.

That’s where it stayed, until 2001 when Sherwood Restorations bought it. They set about its restoration, fitting a Climax 1100 motor and a four-speed MGA gearbox before selling it on to its current owner.

1956 EJS Climax Special

It’s now in stunning condition and complete with FIA papers for historic racing. And because it was entered at Goodwood in period it’s also eligible for the Goodwood Revival – making it a car with unique access to the historic racing events of the world.

This little beauty is a testament to creativity in speed, and with its complete historic papers would be an awesome and unique machine for the historic racer on the go. It’ll head to auction on the second of November, 2014, at Artcurial’s Automobiles sur les Champs 7 sale. Head to their official website here for more details.
