Tyrrell 006 / 2 -1973 – Widescreen Gallery

Tyrrell 006 It has been 60 years since the living legend we know as Sir Jackie Stewart entered the cockpit of a single-seater for the first time at Goodwood. Let’s take a look at one of the most memorable cars from the amazing career that followed…

LMC_7859

This year’s Goodwood Revival brought together some of his most iconic cars from a driving career that spanned 13 years and included 3 Formula 1 World Championships.

LMC_7846

We have a closer look at one of his most memorable championship cars, the 1973 Tyrrell Ford 006/2 that helped Sir Jackie steer to victory for the last time in Formula 1.

LMC_1386

The 1970’s is often heralded as one of the most magical periods of motor racing in history. A period defined by drivers with a dedication and singular goal to win, cars that were mechanically raw, racing that was awesome and terrifying at the same time, the rise of stardom and glamour. What wasn’t to like about the action of Formula 1?

LMC_1387

Some names will never be forgotten from this period of racing. And among those most fondly remembered will be Jackie Stewart, the “Flying Scot”.

LMC_1385

Tyrrell Ford 006/2 was Stewart’s car for a majority of 1973 and was a development on the Tyrrell chassis 005 which Stewart had retained from 1972 for the first 2 races of the new season. The 006 was fitted with inboard brakes, but overall changes to the 005 were slight.

LMC_1375

However, these small changes gave it an edge over its predecessor, making it more competitive with the defending champion’s Lotus 72. Furthermore, changes included the new F1 regulation for deformable crash structures to be integrated into the design for increased safety, giving the Tyrell 006 its recognisable shape.

LMC_1372

On the other hand, perhaps one of the most notable changes was that the Tyrrell 006 became a reproduced car with numbers 006 becoming a model number rather than a chassis number.

LMC_1419

There were three 006 cars produced, 006 and 006/3 driven by François Cevert  with 006 damaged early in 1973 and 006/3 destroyed after Cervert’s tragic and fatal crash at Watkins Glen later that year.

LMC_1350

Draped in the colours of primary sponsor and fuel company Elf, Stewart’s Tyrrell 006/2 had a large presence on the F1 grid and was even more striking at full flight, something that has gone unchanged since its glory days at the height of motor racing.

LMC_1848

Fittingly, the memorable Tyrrell 006/2 would not only bring about Sir Jackie’s 3rd and final F1 world championship but allow him to hold a record 27 F1 victories that would remain unbroken for a further 14 years. It would also help him to hold the record as the most successful British F1 driver for 19 years until Nigel Mansell in 1992.

Honda F1 enginesSoak up the glorious sound of 1980s turbocharged Formula One as Honda engineers fire up Nigel Mansell’s old FW11 and take it for a blast. The Honda F1 V6TT engine was capable of over 1000hp.

Come race time the screaming 12,000rpm, 1.5L RA166E engine produced around 800 horsepower, however during qualifying that figure rested somewhere north of 1000 horsepower. With 4-bar of boost pressure crammed into the tiny engine by a pair of extremely aggressive turbochargers, these engines were built for short-term glory.

This stunning and rare De Tomaso Pantera Group 4 has a racing history that’s unmatched by its peers, and has recently enjoyed a no-expense-spared restoration. It’s up for sale at RMD, and would make for a brilliant ride in historic motorsport.

In 1972 De Tomaso built eight Group 4 Panteras, selling seven to customers and keeping one for their factory race car. This car, chassis #2873, is that one works machine.

De Tomaso Pantera Group 4

De Tomaso raced it from 1972 until ’77, with men like Clay Regazzoni, Mike Parkes, Mario Casoni and Odoardo Govoni at the wheel. In 1977 they sold it to Odoardo Govoni, who continued to race it himself with De Tomaso maintaining it.

Throughout this time the car won the Tour of Italy outright a number of times, including many more class wins, the Italian Championship of Speed (circuit) three times and the 5000cc class in the European GT Championship. Documentation claims over 90 victories for the car.

De Tomaso Pantera Group 4

It’s spent the past two years enjoying a no-expense-spared restoration which included rebuilds of the engine, gearbox, fuel system, suspension and geometry.

The original bodywork is featured and has been finished in the car’s 1973 Giro d’Italia livery.

De Tomaso Pantera Group 4

In September 2013, at the completion of its restoration, the car competed successfully at Spa Francorchamps, and it’s now ready to roll with spares, FIA HTP and even road registration.

We think it’s awesome, and hope to see it go to a good home, or at least find one on the track!

Head to RMD’s website here for more information.

Rosberg 1983 Monaco - Felipe Nasr FW08C storyIn 1983 Keke Rosberg drove the Williams FW08C to a fantastic victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. Today, current Williams Martini Racing driver Felipe Nasr slides behind the wheel.

Monaco would be Rosberg’s only victory of the 1983 season. In the year prior he’d managed to turn a single victory at the Swiss Grand Prix into a World Championship, however it wasn’t meant to be for 1983 and when the dust settled on the season, he was fifth overall.

Fans haven’t forgotten that win at Monaco, which became of particular notice some 20 years later when Keke’s son Nico won the 2013 Monaco Grand Prix, the first time a father and son would win the same F1 GP.

They haven’t forgotten the legendary car he drove that day, either. It was the first F1 car Ayrton Senna would ever drive.

“You’d just go sailing straight past them with your foot flat on the accelerator until you reached the flag marshall’s post. When you saw the whites of their eyes, you knew it was time to brake!” – Brian Foley

When I think about the masters of The Mountain, the Citroen DS/ID is not what comes to mind.

In the very earliest days of the Armstrong 500 however, variety was the name of the game, and this unconventional Citroen was more than happy to shake things up.

Launched in 1955 with out-there aerodynamics, high-tech hydropneumatic suspension and inboard front discs, the Citroen ID19 was a technological marvel.

It pushed the boundaries of automotive design, developing new technologies in handling, braking and ride quality. And what is racing about, if not pushing boundaries?

Enjoy the story of this interesting and successful racing machine in Citroen DS/ID: From Mount Panorama to The Marathon at the Shannons Club.

Nelson Piquet One of the most interesting World Champions Formula One has known, Nelson Piquet was an intelligent driver, a complex character and a true racer.

Brazilian Formula One racer Nelson Piquet is often remembered for his interesting off-track remarks, however it was his skill and cunning on track which earned him fantastic success.

The three time Formula One World Champion made his debut with Ensign at the 1978 German Grand Prix, finished his first race a few rounds later at the Italian GP in a McLaren M23 (BS Fabrications), and stood on the podium for the first time following the 1980 Argentine Grand Prix.

By 1980 he was racing with Parmalat and their iconic Brabham BT49, which he drove to a trio of Formula One Grand Prix victories, and a pair of additional podium finishes before the season was done. He finished second in the World Championship by a considerable margin behind Alan Jones, however his momentum was incredible. He returned with Parmalat in 1981 and became Formula One World Champion for the first time, and achievement he would repeat whilst driving for Fila in 1983 (Brabham), and Camel in 1987 (Williams).

Formula One remembers him as a clever racer and a private playboy. Today, he’s a businessman.

US Grand Prix – Most memorable moments

USA Grand Prix - Ayrton Senna 1990 The 2014 US Grand Prix is right around the corner. While we’re waiting to sit back on the couch and spend a weekend soaking up the action in Texas, let’s look back at some of the wildest moments the American GP has ever seen.

Opening Image: Ayrton Senna at the US Grand Prix 1990 (The Cahier Archive)

Sebring – 1959

In the final round of the 1959 Formula One World Championship, Jack Brabham runs out of fuel within earshot of the finish line. The overall Championship leader jumps out and pushes his car to complete the race, scoring the points and taking his first world title.

Watkins Glen – 1967

Jim Clark dominated the 1967 US Grand Prix, not even a broken suspension support in the rear right could keep him from winning the event for the third time. His ability to keep his injured car in the race secured a 1-2 finish for Lotus, with Graham Hill around six seconds behind.

Long Beach  – 1977

A terrific win for Mario Andretti on home soil, who passed Jody Scheckter (1m 29s in the video above), and snatched victory in front of the elated crowd. “Winning any race is a highlight,” Andretti later said, “but there’s something special about winning your home race”.

Screen Shot 2014-10-31 at 4.26.35 pmLas Vegas – 1981

In 1981 Formula One visited Las Vegas, more specifically, the Ceasers Palace car park! It was a terrific novelty, and the race is remembered for seeing Carlos Reutemann’s chances at the title fade, Alan Jones win and Nelson Piquet walk away with the championship.

Long Beach – 1983

John Watson drove incredibly well at the 1983 US Grand Prix, coming back from 23rd position to win the race outright. It was a fantastic effort, however the race is better remembered for Rosbergs famous spin. Just watch the video!

Dallas – 1984
