Holden FE-FC: The General’s ‘Heavy Metal’ Humpy Hunter

In the late 1950s Holden’s latest-and-greatest FE sedan was a hit with the public, but didn’t catch discerning racers’ eyes.

The Holden FE sedan enjoyed a 50mm longer wheelbase and wider track combined with an anti-sway bar and recirculating ball steering. Wheel diameter dropped to 13 inches, giving the car a lower centre of gravity and nippier acceleration thanks to the resulting shorter gearing.

All of this contributed to a sweeter-handling machine, but the car only saw slight upgrades to the suspension, drivetrain and motor. It was also anything but slight, putting on some 40 kilograms over the FJ, and more again in 1958 with the FC.

Even though the 48-215 and FJ Holdens remained dominant in the early to mid-60s, FEs and FCs held their own on the track. Enjoy their exploits in Holden FE-FC: The General’s ‘Heavy Metal’ Humpy Hunter over at the Shannons Club.

Ferrari RestorationBare hands and bare metal breath life back into some of the finest Italian sportscars ever constructed. Meet the ultimate Ferrari restoration masters.

This terrific film produced by PongoFilms takes us inside the world of authentic Ferrari restoration masters Egidio and Roberto Brandoli. Theirs is a place where metalwork still rules supreme, and the lines between panel beating and art have long since vanished.

MORE: Amazing digital recreation of the Ferrari 330 of 1966 (Gallery)

We felt inspired whilst watching this, filled with such admiration for men who have become the masters of their trade. We can’t help but wonder what the equivalent restoration workshops will be like in 50 or 100 years, when carbon fiber and high tech electronics will no doubt make up the spare parts bins surrounding the prized vintage machines of the future.

Jim Clark's final raceHallowing scenes unfold as the unthinkable happens on the Hockenheim Ring, April 7th 1968. A young cameraman was there to capture Jim Clark’s final race. This edit is both beautiful and tragic at the same time. 1968 started out so promisingly for Jim Clark, the Scot took his 25th Formula One Grand Prix victory at South Africa, becoming the most successful driver at the time in the history of Formula One.

Jenson Button 2000 Imola

Jenson Button at Imola in 2000, thanks to The Cahier Archive

It’s been fifteen seasons since Formula 1’s smoothest man, Jenson Button, took over Alex Zanardi’s seat for his debut season with Williams, and we’ve enjoyed watching him race through every one.

Making his way into the Formula 1 paddock at just 20 years old in 2000, he was Britain’s youngest ever Formula One driver. He quickly became the youngest Formula 1 driver to score a point when he finished second at Brazil – the second race of the season.

Since then he’s collected 266 Formula 1 starts, 50 podiums, 15 wins and one of the most inspiring Formula 1 World Drivers’ Championship titles in recent memory when he won with Brawn in 2009.

MORE: Gallery: The epic career of Jenson Button

He’s also put in some of the sport’s most memorable and exciting performances in that time, and consistently pulls incredible race pace out of what ever machine he’s driving.

At time of writing his contract for 2015 is up in the air, and we hope to see this exciting racer and quality man make his way back into Formula 1 for 2015 and a 16th season.

Until then, catch up with Jenson Button and David Coulthard as they reminisce about his 15 years in Formula 1 in this segment from the BBC.

HSRCA Tasman Trophy

Images: Seth Reinhardt

The Historic Sports and Racing Car Association of New South Wales returned to Sydney Motorsport Park over the last weekend of November, to spend a summer weekend celebrating the golden age of motorsport.

The Tasman Trophy builds upon the much-loved Tasman Revival historic race meetings as a national historic race meet which welcomes all historic categories and provides feature events for the cars of the Tasman Series and Formula 5000s.

HSRCA Tasman Trophy

This year’s event saw a brilliant and varied collection of sports and racing machinery gather at Sydney Motorsport Park for a packed weekend of motorsport. All categories were beautifully represented, from older sportscars and racers through to the always-exciting Group N, mighty Formula 5000s (which really do make the Earth shake) and Formula 1 legends, and everything in between.

HSRCA Tasman Trophy

The variety and fiery racing of the massive fields of Porsches, Fords, Holdens, Alfas, Minis, Austins, Mazdas and more that make up Groups S and N are brilliant to watch. Awesome open wheelers like the 1982 Penske Indy Car, 1972 Surtees F1:TS9B#6, 1982 Spirit Honda/BMW and of course the huge 16-strong field of Formula 5000s and no less fierce ’60s open wheelers, Formula Juniors and Formula Fords are captivating.

We also loved watching the 1966 Ferrari 206SP Replica seduce everyone who passed by with its stunning looks.

HSRCA Tasman Trophy

Racing throughout the weekend was closely-competed and well driven, and it’s a real joy to us that these cars are not just maintained beautifully, but are used and raced hard. If you head out to the track to check out the racing it doesn’t matter what group is out, you’re bound to enjoy a fun and exciting race.

HSRCA Tasman Trophy

And when you head back into the pits and paddock the people of Australia’s historic motorsport scene are some of the friendliest and most relaxed you’ll find. It’s a great atmosphere and always a pleasure to get up close and personal with these beautiful machines and to chat with the people who run and maintain them.

Next time out the HSRCA is heading to Wakefield Park to work off some of the holiday’s feasting with an action packed Historic Summer meet. It’ll be held at Wakefield Park on the 21st and 22nd of February, 2015, and we can’t wait!

Head to www.hsrca.com for more. Photos by Seth Reinhardt.

1964 SUNBEAM TIGER LE MANS COUPE

Images: Fiskens

Three very special lightweight Le Mans Sunbeam Tigers were built in 1964, to go after the GT category in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Five decades on and this car’s still in racing condition and looking for its next adventure, up for sale at Fiskens.

This car, 7734 KV, is the first of the three competition cars. It’s based on the production car, which was then heavily modified for endurance racing and fitted with a lightweight fastback coupe body built by Lister.

1964 SUNBEAM TIGER LE MANS COUPE

The car was used in 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans testing, and then taken on by Ian Hall, deputy head of the Rootes competition department.

He used the car in sprint races before releasing it to the private market in 1965. At this point John Eccles bought it and his son used it to compete in the GT class at the GRSCC Mallory Park sprint. It would compete at Snetterton later in the year, and then at Brands Hatch when it was joined by the other two Le Mans Tigers – the only time this would occur.

1964 SUNBEAM TIGER LE MANS COUPE

7734 KV moved between owners throughout the late ’60s and early ’70s, but its competition career continued unabated. In 1973 Dick Barker bought it and exported it to the USA, treating it to a loving restoration to refresh it after a decade of competition.

The restoration took time and it wasn’t until 1997 that the car returned to the scene, reuniting with the other two Le Mans Tigers. Barker kept the car for some three decades, eventually passing it on to its current owner in 2003.

1964 SUNBEAM TIGER LE MANS COUPE

Since then it’s competed in the Goodwood RAC TT Celebration race as well as the Le Mans Classic.

What more can you ask for in a historic racer than a lovingly-cared for, well raced and fun car with an interesting history?

This car is a beautiful example of motorsport’s eclectic and exciting history, and is a historically-significant, rare and ready-for-competition racing car. It’ll make an interesting and exciting historic racer, and we’re looking forward to its next half-century of competition!

Head to Fiskens’ website here for more information.

1983 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix

Bathurst on four wheels is exciting – on two it’s something else! Hang on tight for this broadcast of the 1983 500cc Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Bathurst may have huge significance to Australian motorsport and a massive global appeal, but its undulating turns have only felt the might of the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix nine times.

The Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix was even born in the area. The first race, then called the Grand Prix of Australia was held on a public course near Yetholme, just outside of Bathurst, in 1914.

The event made nine appearances on The Mountain, with the last held in 1988. After that it became part of the Grand Prix motorcycle racing season and moved to the (equally) classic Phillip Island, with a brief sojourn at Eastern Creek throughout the early-to-mid ’90s.

Each time the big bikes hit the track at Bathurst they were sure to produce something spectacular. This race, the 1983 500cc Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix, is no exception!

It’s a smorgasbord of awesome ’80s machinery, fierce riders and brilliant retro footage. Enjoy!

This 1983 Lola 596C sports racer is an absolutely awesome historic racer thats affordable and ready to rock. It’s up for sale at Fantasy Junction.

Showing great spirit for the sport, Fantasy Junction have been running the car as their team car, and they’ve done pretty well with it!

It’s run up and down the west coast of America putting its stamp on historic endurance racing there. The SCCA Illigen Classic 4-Hours, NASA 12-Hours and 12 Hours of the Cascades all sit upon its resume. And those are just the bullet points – they estimate that this is the most winning small bore sports race car in the United States.

1983 Lola 596C Sports Racer

Being that it’s an active endurance race car, it comes set up as such! Our favourite feature? The Drummond bridgeported 12A Mazda rotary, which runs through a Taylor Racing gearbox and Hewland Mk. 9 five-speed transmission.

Everything on this machine is chosen to find the perfect balance of endurance and speed, and its results on the track tell us that it’s hit the mark.

When you go racing, you need spares – and this car is sold with everything you need. Wheels, spare bits of body, gears, moulds – the works.

1983 Lola 596C Sports Racer

Most often scariest moment we experience when looking at historic race cars, is the one in which we encounter the price. This car, however, as gentle on the wallet as it isn’t on its competitors! US$59,500 will put you in the drivers seat.

This 1983 Lola 596C represents a stunning opportunity to get into the thick of historic racing in a well sorted, proven machine – and we love it. Get out there, race and celebrate the golden age of motorsport in the best way possible.

It’s a real journey moving through the years as design sensibilities and aesthetics change. Each programme manages to convey the excitement and atmosphere of the event, and the classic Dunlop sponsorship is classy and shows a sensitivity to the heart and soul of the sport.

I have to admit a soft spot for psychedelic shift in the late ’60s and early ’70s designs, but they’re all awesome and we hope you enjoy them!
