When Toyota first appeared at Bathurst for the 1965 Armstrong 500 with a trio of RT40 Coronas, they were fighting an uphill battle in more ways than one.

For their first appearance on The Mountain, Toyota was looking to prove that not only were their cars well-built and reliable, but fast and fun as well.

They would also have to make some headway into the lingering effects which both nations faced after the end of World War 2 just two decades earlier.

At a time when the cars which raced around Bathurst on Sunday were exactly the same as the cars you could walk into a dealership and buy on Monday morning, motorsport, and particularly Bathurst, was the perfect opportunity to speak to the people.

Those three little Coronas spoke louder than their small stature would suggest, and you can enjoy their tale at the Shannons Club in Toyota RT40 Corona: Japan’s first Bathurst warrior.

Classic Duels: 1991 Japanese Motorcycle Grand Prix

1991 Japanese Grand Prix

The final laps of the 1991 Japanese Motorcycle Grand Prix at Suzuka were unforgettable. Hang on as Michael Doohan, John Kocinski, Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz duke it out for honours in a spectacular finish.

Wayne Rainey dominated the 1990 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season and wrapped up the championship early with seven wins and a huge championship lead to his name. However, if you looked a little further down the championship order, some exciting stuff was brewing.

Mick Doohan won his first Grand Prix at the Hungaroring and was really coming on song. Kevin Schwantz was also putting in some scintillating rides, spending most of his time on the podium and claiming five wins, if lacking a little in consistency!

This set us up for a brilliant 1991 season as the three riders developed an exciting rivalry. This would be expressed beautifully when the three riders were joined by John Kocinski for an out-and-out sprint to the line of the opening round of the season at Suzuka.

We pick up the action for the last lap, with Kevin Schwartz leading the other three riders and nobody giving an inch. Enjoy.

Buy a Bonkers Group B 1984 Audi Sport Quattro

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

Images thanks to RM Auctions, by Erik Fuller

If you wanted to go race in the utterly mad Group B World Rally Championship in 1982, you had to build homologation cars to qualify. These cars were (slightly) less mad.

This 1984 Audi Sport Quattro is a perfect example of the ‘slightly’ in less mad Group B homologation cars, and it’s heading to auction at RM Auctions’ Arizona sale in January, 2015.

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

Only 2014 Audi Sport Quattros were built for Group B homologation, and they were all stunners. With just 8,300 kilometers on the clock, this particular car exists as one of the best and most original remaining examples.

With the relaxed regulations of Group B, and the requirement of only 200 cars to meet homologation rules, manufacturers were free to push boundaries – and Audi smashed them with the Sport Quattro.

The Sport Quattro took the already-impressive Group 4 Quattro and fixed all of its downfalls. Its wheelbase was shortened and its steel monocoque shell featured GRP and carbon-Kevlar panels to trim weight.

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

For power the racing car received a turbocharged 2,133 cubic centimetre five-cylinder alloy-bock motor. Putting out 450 brake horsepower tuned for competition the car could run zero to one hundred in 4.8 seconds.

On the road going version you’ll just have to make do with 302 brake horsepower.

To bring that power into check the car featured brakes developed for Porsche’s 917 – AP four-piston racing brakes, ventilated and slotted. The road version of the car would receive a selectable ABS system.

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

To keep the car connected to the road it was given four-wheel independent coil-spring suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars.

The 214 Sport Quattros which Audi built were sold through specialised dealers to select customers, and ran at a not-inconsiderable 200,000 Deutschmarks.

Despite the road-going ticket, this is no hand-holding road car. It handles like a race car and requires management of plenty of turbo lag as you wait to spin up that big KKK-K27 turbocharger. Driving it requires talent, mechanical sympathy and a healthy respect. We love the sound of that!

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

This particular car was originally purchased by Yoshikuni Okamoto, and then sold to the current caretaker.

Its white paint is understood to be original, and it still sits on its factory-correct white alloy wheels. It will be sold with its original tools, jack, owner’s and service manual, radio with manual and set of fresh original racing belts.

In contrast to most of the competition cars we enjoy so much, this one has been gently driven throughout its time – and that’s a good thing! It’s been recently, and thoroughly, serviced by Audi of Fairfield Connecticut and is registered for road use.

1984 Audi Sport Quattro

While it doesn’t have a competition history of its own, this car represents a significant, rare and awesome piece of the overall history of the World Rally Championship. It’s an artefact of Group B – one of the wildest times that the sport has witnessed – and you can drive it on the road!

We want one.

Head to RM Auctions’ official website here for the full details. Their Arizona sale will be held on the 15th and 16th of January, 2015 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa.

Mario Andretti- Lotus 80- Photo of the day

mario andretti Lotus 80Mario Andretti tests an early version of the radical yet troublesome Lotus 80.

The original car would require no wings due to the huge downforce it produced and the team was excited with the possibilities.

However, a serious problem was encountered during testing. Mario Andretti reported that at speed the car behaved very well, but in braking and cornering, where speeds were lower, the car lost downforce alarmingly then regained it unexpectedly. It was discovered the car was generating too much downforce for the driver to cope with. The problem was twofold: firstly, the ground effect’s low pressure area under the car was moving around with the car’s centre of gravity. The phenomenon was known as porpoising, as the car appeared to be lifting and squatting at different speeds, causing it to lurch violently through corners. Secondly, the slightest difference in track ride height including off cambered corners, kerbs, etc. affected the undercar pressure hugely. The team experimented by fitting the car with wings, but this had little effect on the way the car behaved. Andretti persevered with the car, but his new team mate Carlos Reutemann refused to drive it and stayed with the Lotus 79.

Reviving the spirit of the McLaren- Honda MP4/4 – Premium

FFF_6033

In 1988, McLaren and Honda formed a partnership that would result in one of the most successful racing cars of all time. In 2015, the two are set to reunite and are looking to set the bar high. But what could be higher than their last attempt at a turbo powered Formula 1 car? We take a look at their awesome creation from 1988 and the last era of turbo F1 – The McLaren MP4/4.

The MP4/4 was a car that had everything a team could ask for. Superior performance matched with a superior driver lineup and a team ready to back it all up.

DSC_4348

Rewind back to 1988, McLaren-Honda had developed the MP4/4 as a response to the domination of the Williams team in ‘87. It was the very last hurrah to a dying breed of turbo powered Formula 1 car that had dominated the series for the better part of a decade.

FFF_8801

However, tough new restrictions on fuel and boost pressure for turbo cars meant that expectations for competitive, let alone championship winning turbo cars were initially doubtful. However, the MP4/4 was quick to overturn these thoughts by cleaning up the field race after race and acted as a final salute to an exciting, although dangerous era of F1 racing.

FFF_6031

The superior Honda RA168-E 1.5L Turbo V6 paired together with the ‘dream team’ driver lineup of veteran Alain Prost and the talented Ayrton Senna, team McLaren were seemingly unstoppable. Narrowly missing out on having the perfect season, the MP4/4 will forever be remembered for its dominance of the grid while at the hands of two of Formula 1’s most memorable drivers.

FFF_6332

Watching onboard footage of either of these drivers on the limit and you’ll realize that their skill was nothing short of heroic. Piloting 700HP of force fed power in a lightweight carbon fibre package with nothing but a retro 6 speed manual transmission on the narrow streets of Monaco? Frankly, I can’t think of anything more frightening.

Now let’s fast forward back to today’s situation.

For 2015; turbo power has returned, McLaren and Honda are set to revive a legendary partnership after a disappointing season for McLaren at the rear of the competition. And McLaren’s driver lineup is now complete with 2 former world champions in Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button.

McLaren

Will 2015 bring about the revival of McLaren-Honda glory that we once saw with the MP4/4?

1988 Mclaren MP4/4 Stats:

- Claimed 15/16 Pole positions

- Claimed 15/16 race victories

- Claimed 10 one-two victories from 16 starts

- Led for 1003 of the 1031 laps in the entire season

Holden Torana L34 – Brabham and Moss

Holden Torana L34It is said that an additional 30,000 people turned up to Bathurst in 1976 for the purpose of watching Brabham and Moss race this car. Things didn’t go as smoothly for the Brabham / Moss combo on the mountain in 1976 as the pair might have hoped, with a jammed gearbox causing a Triumph Dolomite Sprint to ram into the back of it on the start line.

MORE: The best of Stirling Moss (Gallery)

Jack Brabham was behind the wheel at the time, and the damage was severe enough that the race was effectively over for the world famous duo before it had even begun. However, the fact still stood that tens of thousands of additional fans had turned out to see Moss and Brabham drive at Bathurst, so the team hastily repaired the car and sent it back out.

The car re-entered the track several hours later, primarily for the purpose of appearances. Moss explained after the race that he was really enjoying driving the car… until the engine expired.

Factory 1978 Porsche 935

One of the most awe-inspiring machines of sportscar racing in the late ’70s, Porsche’s 935 was also one of the most popular. Still just as, or even more, awe-inspiring, we so no reason for this classic to be any less popular today!

This one, a factory 1978 Porsche 935, is up for sale at RMD.

This car is chassis 930 890 0016, and was originally sold to Reinhold Joest.

Joest campaigned it in the World Championship for Makes and the German DRM (Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft) series in 1978. During the year it made at an appearance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans sponsored by the Whittington Brothers, but didn’t finish.

An accident at Hockenheim at the end of 1978 saw Joest end up in the hospital and the car damaged, but not written off.

Factory 1978 Porsche 935

The shell remained, but its parts were moved to a new Joest shell – 009-0001J. In 1979 the original shell, 890 0016, was repaired and used by Volkery Merl again in the DRM series. When these duties were completed the parts were once again stripped from 890-0016 and both shell and bodywork were sold to John Lagodny.

It was then built up again, using parts from Lagodny’s ex-Kremer 935. Lagodny raced the car in Benelux championship races and on the European hillclimb scene through to 1981 and was extremely successful.

The pair not only raced prodigiously, but won with similar vigour. They claimed some ten outright victories, mostly in 1980 and 1981, along with plenty of class victories and podiums.

In ’82 the car was sold to Jurgen Kannacher, who had owned it briefly before Lagodny. He organised Henz-Jurgen Dahmen for driving duties in a series of DRM races, achieving a best result of 7th at the Nurburgring in 1982.

Factory 1978 Porsche 935

It was then sold to Bo Strandell, for whom Anders Olofsson raced it once in 1983 at Falkenberg in the Swedish GT Championship and finished third.

After a brief stint in a Swedish museum it was bought in 1984 by John Greasley. Greasley painted it in an orange Jagermeister livery and hired the car out to Porsche Club drivers who were contesting the Pirelli Championship. This period saw it tackle classic British tracks like Mallory Park, Oulton Park, Silverstone, Donington, Brands Hatch and Snetterton.

It moved on once again in 2005, this time to Michael Foveny in Australia, who fully restored it and gave it to Roitmayer GmbH to race prepare it.

Factory 1978 Porsche 935

It’s currently running a freshly-rebuilt water-to-air twin-turbo motor and is wearing its 1978 24 Hours of Le Mans Liqui-Moly livery. It’s been racing in the Classic Endurance Racing series since 2009 and has run at Silverstone, Spa, Monza, in the Le Mans Classic, at Paul Ricard and at the Nurburgring.

After an adventurous life of near-incessant racing this Porsche 935 is just as awe-inspiring as the day it rolled onto the track for the first time. It’s correct and ready for the track, including current FIA HTP papers and even its original Wagenpass.

Head to RMD’s website here for more information.

“You can’t have gravel pits where people can spin into because there’s nowhere to have it because there’s a hotel or house there.”

The streets of Monaco, cradled as they are by the beautiful harbour, are amongst the most beautiful in the world. When they’re set up for racing – they get even better.

And when the racing cars doing said racing are the most glorious examples of motorsport’s golden age, they’re more beautiful still!

This video, by Carwell Casswell, sets a new bar for production values. It captures Monaco, the glorious machinery of the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique and the legendary drivers who race them perfectly.

“These aren’t works of art that you hang on the wall. They’re something which have to be enjoyed. You have to make them live.”

It’s no slouch when it comes to the content either! The stunning visuals are set against the insights of great drivers like Derek Bell, Alain De Cadenet and Stirling Moss as they reflect on what makes Monaco so gripping; so special.

If you didn’t have the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique on your bucket list before watching this, you most certainly will after. Take three minutes and settle in for pure classic motorsport inspiration.

Five Formula One racing drivers who started the 1968 season were not alive by the end of the year. Across Indy, F1, F2 and Sportscars the cars were fast, and safety was a secondary concern at best. Jim Clark, Mike Spence, Jo Schlesser and Ludovico Scarfiotti lost their lives, and have never been forgotten. Glory came at a very high price in 1968.
